HPUX 11.23 v2 and disk slices

Hi all,
it's the first time I deal with 11.23 for ia64 and with my grat surprise I found out the internal disks of my server are divided in slices.
The slice 2 is used in vg00 but there are other 2 slices configured.
Please could you tell me where I can learn more about slices (I've never seen slices on HPUX before) and what are slices 1 and 3 used for?
