HPUX 11.i Disabling ports

Hi,

I have ports 111 and 135 open on one of my machines. Does anyone know what these ports are? I would like to check with lsof but the software is considered 3rd party and I can not install.

Thanks

Re: HPUX 11.i Disabling ports

My linux box /etc/services tell's me:
sunrpc 111/tcp rpcbind # SUN Remote Procedure Call
sunrpc 111/udp rpcbind # SUN Remote Procedure Call

epmap 135/tcp # DCE endpoint resolution
epmap 135/udp # DCE endpoint resolution

Port 135 - MS RPC

Port 111 - sunrpc

I guess my real question is, if I turn them off what can it have an affect on?

Re: HPUX 11.i Disabling ports

I thought rpcbind was used also by NFS.
DCE can be used for example by monitoring systems like OpenView.

I dont use NFS or OpenView, this is a raw oracle database server that needs to be locked down hard.

Re: HPUX 11.i Disabling ports

I don't know what more uses these ports, I only gave some example I saw on systems I use at work.
From my head I don't think DCE is used by Oracle.
I would say, test to close down these ports on a test system running the same applications. I would not do it on a production system untill I am very sure they are not used.

Peter
