HPUX 11i - freezes

I installed HP-UX 11i (June 2001) on a C180 with 256MB/4GB, and CDE LANG="zh_CN.utf8".

From time to tme the keyboard and mouse freeze for a few seconds. Is this normal?

No ..... top show anything ? how about glance ? can you tusc the Xserver process to get clues ?

errors ? /var/dt/Xerrors $HOME/.dt/error.log , syslog.log ?

Is the Event Monitoring System EMS installed/ running ?

Re: HPUX 11i - freezes

Alex,

I did not record exactly what was running at the time of the freezes. I was probably only running make or configure. The last time it happened, I recalled, I was running "swinstall". I suspect there was a spike of CPU usage, but I was not running top. And since it was frozen, I ran "top" afterward. The highest CPU usage was "X" at about 4%.

Since then I installed "perl 5.6.1", and increase MAXUSERS to 128 for another error. I did not change the timeslice, because I did not think it would do any good.

It did not happen yesterday, but then I was only using Netscape.

The /var/dt/Xerrors $HOME/.dt/error.log are empty. I do not have the syslog.log for that period of time, it was reset. I do not have EMS or glance.

Would a spike in CPU usage cause the keyboard, mouse or actually the screen to freeze?

Thank you,

Re: HPUX 11i - freezes

anythings possible ... X on 11.i is newish and a bug would not be unheard of .... ps keep an eye out for core files too.

If I'm honest I'm not sure what caused this but a hang of the mouse and keyboard I would consider an Xserver hang.

Re: HPUX 11i - freezes

I think I have found the patches:

PHSS_24087, PHSS_24091

Thanks,

Re: HPUX 11i - freezes

same thing happens with me, on a C110, except that it freezes until i reboot it. interestingly, it only does this with me during swinstall as well... i just installed 11i today, and i havent really researched the problem yet, there is nothing unusual in the usual logs... i basically chalked it up to a generation gap between the hardware and software, it better not freeeze when i install it on our servers... yikes!
just do it!
