HPUX can't boot automatically

After abnormal shutdown(by power down)HPUX booting in single mode because of VG00 is not available. When i do "vgchange -a -y VG00; mount -a; init 5" it's ok. vgscan says that all phisycal volumes are already recorded in /etc/lvmtab. How can i make VG00 auto-available?

Re: HPUX can't boot automatically

Hi Just_K,

Based on my experiences; when the abnormal shutdown happened, the HP-UX will boot to single user first. This to let the sys-admin to check the file system first.

Run the fsck > activate the vg00 > check the primary & alternate boot path (make sure is the same as the hardware path of your primary & alternate boot disk) > restart the system to make sure everything is up & running normally.

Hope this information can help you.

Cheers,
AW

Hi,

it's seems that result of setboot is :

dvd : Alternate bootpath : 0/0/2/0.3.0

Set alternate path with second disk

setboot -a 0/1/1/0.1.0 if ioscan -fnC disk give :

Re: HPUX can't boot automatically

Just K ,

Can you check with both the disk:

# lifcp /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0:AUTO -

# lifcp /dev/rdsk/c4t0d0:AUTO -

if the boot area is ok.

cheers,
Raj.

Re: HPUX can't boot automatically

Strange, because when you execute setboot -v you have :

setboot -v
Primary bootpath : 0/1/1/0.0.0
Alternate bootpath : 0/0/2/0.3.0

Autoboot is ON (enabled)
Autosearch is ON (enabled)

VG00 is composed to :

dev/vg00
/dev/dsk/c2t0d0
/dev/dsk/c4t0d0

setboot primary is ok , so disk 1 0/1/1/0.0.0 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE HP 36.4GMAU3036NC
/dev/dsk/c2t0d0 /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0

setboot alternate is not ok, you must specify disk 7 , so
disk 7 0/4/1/0.0.0 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE HP 36.4GST336754LC
/dev/dsk/c4t0d0 /dev/rdsk/c4t0d0

setboot -a 0/4/1/0.0.0

have you some events about disks in /var/opt/resmon/log/event.log ?

Re: HPUX can't boot automatically

Hi Just_K,

Check the LIF files on both of your vg00 disks :

# lifls /dev/dsk/c2t0d0
# lifls /dev/dsk/c4t0d0

Run also this command, to check the mirror part :

# lvlnboot -v
# lvdisplay /dev/vg00/lv*

Run the command below to check the disk itself :

# dd if=/dev/rdsk/c2t0d0 of=/dev/null bs=1024 count=500
# dd if=/dev/rdsk/c4t0d0 of=/dev/null bs=1024 count=500

Please let us know if you facing errors once you run the 'dd' command, cause usually the particular harddisk is failure.

Hope this information can help you.

Cheers,

Re: HPUX can't boot automatically

Hi Just_K,

Try again the commands below (will take times) :

# dd if=/dev/rdsk/c2t0d0 of=/dev/null bs=1024k
# dd if=/dev/rdsk/c4t0d0 of=/dev/null bs=1024k

And also the commands below :

# diskinfo -v /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0
# diskinfo -v /dev/rdsk/c4t0d0

And see whether you have the error on the disk or not.

If one of the disk shows error, this indicate the particular disk with error is faulty (need to replace).

If you have a support with HP, you can contact HP now and let them prepare the disk for you plus the engineer.

Hope this information can help you.

Cheers,
AW

Re: HPUX can't boot automatically

hi,

I think that boot problem is caused by a bad value in AUTO in primary disk (option lm)and alternate path bad before modification:

initially :

setboot -v
Primary bootpath : 0/1/1/0.0.0
Alternate bootpath : 0/0/2/0.3.0

# lifcp /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0:AUTO -
hpux -lm /stand/vmunix
# lifcp /dev/rdsk/c4t0d0:AUTO -
hpux

Need to set hpux -lq /stand/vmunix in AUTO

and try to reboot for verify that all it's ok.
