hpux not start

Hi

A400 11.00. I create a Ignite tape, then replace boot disk 18Gb for other one 36Gb. Boot from Ignite tape and Install.
now at boot nothing appear:

ISL> ls

Utilities on this system are:

filename type start size created
====================================================
HPUX -12928 832 800 97/11/06 02:10:13

ISL> hpux

ISL>

What happen?

I try with "hpux", "HPUX", "hpux -is", "hpux -lm".... with same results

Thanks in advance, Jorge

Re: hpux not start

Hi Jorge:

At the boot prompt, with the Ignite tape in the server, type:

SEARCH

Look for a sequential access media device (i.e. a tape) and note the (e.g. 10/8.0.2)

BOOT

Respond NO when asked to Interact with IPL?

A reboot should occur and in about 10-minutes you should see "Recovery tape created...."

Re: hpux not start

James

It´s possible that I dont explain very well the problem.

This morning, I Create a Ignite tape: "make_tape_recovery -a /dev/rmt/0mn -d "Ignite_tape" -I -v -x inc_entire=vg00 -x inc_entire=vg02". It needs about 2 hours.

After This, I add memory, and replace the root disk.

Then I start with Ignite Tape, and Install. process was running...

I arrived, three hours later, and the box dont start:

Re: hpux not start

Maybe not the reason for trouble, but adjust the console path from

Console path: 0/0/4/0.643

to

Console path: 0/0/4/0.0

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: hpux not start

Please find out if the restore was successful.

Go to GSP and have a look at the console log (CL) and try to find out what happened.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: hpux not start

Hi

In GSP only see hardware errors. I try one more time Ignite Restore...
If fails, I will mount the older disk, and create another Ignite tape.

Thanks, Jorge

OK, my mistake (console path). The path depends on the type of GSP. Type help at the GSP prompt.

If you get any A.01.xx firmware, you have revision A GSP and console path needs to be 0/0/4/0. If version is some thing like B.02.xx, console path is 0/0/4/1.

"In GSP only see hardware errors"

What kind of errors? Review not only system logs (SL), but also console logs (CL).

Hope this helps!

Re: hpux not start

Are you sure about the paths shown?

I suspect the problem with LIF label on the boot disk. At the ISL> ls
it should show other ISL utilities as well besides HPUX. The LIF label is not written properly as part of Ignite.

Can you try to boot from another disk ( assuming you have another pair of mirror )

May be you need to try booting from tape again and see if the ignite process is complete.

Re: hpux not start

Hi rccmum

Probably the problem is about LIF... I only have 2 disks and 2 vg... I dont have Mirror.
Now, Im restoring again from Ignite tape, and I wish this time will be Ok...

Re: hpux not start

Your logfile looks OK at the end. But the "finish" is missing, it stops while restoring. Post your results from second try!

Here is the log:

x ./monitor_bpr, 20480 bytes, 40 tape blocks
* Download_mini-system: Complete
* Loading_software: Begin
* Installing boot area on disk.
* Enabling swap areas.
* Backing up LVM configuration for "vg00".
* Backing up LVM configuration for "vg02".
* Processing the archive source (CEJ_11.00).
* Wed Nov 02 21:36:03 EST 2005: Starting archive load of the source
(CEJ_11.00).
* Positioning the tape (/dev/rmt/0mn).
* Archive extraction from tape is beginning. Please wait.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: hpux not start

Hi

There is the log of the second time. The problem persists.
I replace the disks, and make a new ignite tape.

If anyone have an idea....

Thanks, Jorge

Re: hpux not start

What disks are you using?

BTW, the servers firmware is old.
It's a good idea to update from 41.18 to 43.50 (patch PF_CHAW4350)

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: hpux not start

The original disks are:
VG00 18GB
VG02 36GB.

I replace root disk 18GB for 36GB.

I just update FW, and the problem persists.

How I verified Ignite Tape?

Re: hpux not start

I installed 11.00 version. the creation of ignite tape was succesfull. When I install from ignite tape, all looks like Ok, but when the box start, doesnt start.

now, I install original disks and backup all the system, then I will reinstal ths system.

Thanks for all, Jorge
Torsten.

Re: hpux not start

Just to clarify this: 11.00 is your OS version, the current ignite is something like C.6.2.x.

Anyway, this problem could be caused by missing patches. You may patch your system before backup or just do a cold install with current media, if you want.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: hpux not start

At the boot prompt(the first prompt after you hit any key in 10 seconds) you could also do

sea ipl

To find all the disks that you can boot from.
Its possible that your primary path is not the correct boot disk.
