Re: hpux server models; used machines
I got at home a D270, but my wife goes mad about it so it is mainly switched off...
So go for a BXXX
My 2 cents
All the best

Re: hpux server models; used machines
Look for a A400 or A500, it is a very nice little server (just 2 units high) and has a remote management card. And, is not too old.

Re: hpux server models; used machines
You can get a L Class server also , from Ebay.

SolutionRealistically, weight and size make the L and K class boxes too big for home use. The probably aren't certified by the FCC for residential use either, but the FCC doesn't have a police force so why worry.
If you want to learn basic hp-ux an old b class box is small and will do you just fine. If you want to learn Serviceguard, which requires server class boxes, then you might want to go for one of the low end rx or rp boxes on the used market. They have them as small as 1U or 3U of rack space, and that won't make a huge dent in your laboratory.
My D class boxes are turned off right now until I can get my home networking straigtened out. Also, my office is small, and I can't stand the noise from them and my JBOD. A good pair of ear covers should do the trick. Fortuneately besides electric use, they have their own room and Jerusalem is pretty cool, being higher elevation. You don't want to operate the boxes much over 95 degrees F.

Re: hpux server models; used machines
If you want to practice MC/Service Guard Cluster also , you need to have two identical server, with at least two network card each, and MC/SG software installed (Priced product). HP-UX Misson Critical Operating Environment OS, ships MC/SG as bundled, fyi.
Cheers,
Raj.

Re: hpux server models; used machines
just find an ebay seller that is close enough for you to pick it up. of course, unless you can pick up 180 pounds and put it in your vehicle, i'd bring a few torque tips to partially dismantle it. at least the power supply and peripheal bay.
and be sure you know what your going to be using for a power cord. A k box doesn't use a "d" type computer cord.
k260's seem to be pretty available. ofcourse a 4xx, 3xx, 5xx does have more peripheal capacity

Re: hpux server models; used machines
Apart from service guard a workstation seems to be a better choice for practicing on a HPUx system in home environment reason being it will use less space and will not lokk much different from a desktop PC.
Allthough if you plan to practice for Service Guard than apart from two servers you would also require some sort of shared storage, switch etc. as well. Still a K , D or R class would be more appropriate in server range for home use.

Re: hpux server models; used machines
There are a lot of used servers available in the market. Just you need to do is spent some time in any of the search sites.
see the links below.
http://www.abtechsys.com/hp_servers/r_class.html
http://www.penncomputer.com/usedhp9000.htm
http://www.ismweb.com/pricing/alpha.html
http://www.genesisglobalinc.com/used_hp9000.html
http://www.atlantixglobal.com/products/hp/hp9000.jsp
If you want to go for a less costly system, you may select a D220/R380.
You may also have very old systems like E,I or H class machine.

Syam

Re: hpux server models; used machines
If the hardware requirements are not high, you may go for used rp24XX series boxes.
Look for "www.epoka.com" You may get the good deal from them

Re: hpux server models; used machines
also don't buy too old ones because you won't get the latest software, patches, etc
remember: "VALUE for Money" & "Money for something that is useable"
we will soon scrap a K250, unfortunately you will have to come to the Indian ocean ;)
