HPUX USB ports, and using the UPS port as a serial port

Hi,

I've got a HP9000 RP3410 model system running HPUX 11i, with an 8 port PCI MUX card installed. I need to get rid of the MUX card, and will need to redeploy the 2 serial devices (a modem and a printer) attached to this MUX to other ports on the system. So there are two thoughts I have:

1. Use the USB ports on the system, with a "USB to Serial" converter (you can pick these up for around $50 each). However after reading a few of the posts on here, I have noted that a few people have mentioned that HPUX only supports basic USB keyboards and mice.

2. My second idea was to connect the modem to the UPS port, and replace the serial printer with an IP based one. However other posts have also indicated the UPS port does not function as a proper serial port.

Has anyone had any experience with either getting other USB devices (other than keyboards/mice) working under HPUX, or getting the UPS port on this model system to work as a proper serial port?

If you know of any other options, i'd love to hear them too!

Regards,
Daniel

Re: HPUX USB ports, and using the UPS port as a serial port

Hi Daniel,

The options of usinf USB device never tried but yes you can use remote port instead of UPS port for connecting a modem. UPS port do not work for modem but you should have a remote port. This is a port for connecting modem only.

Re: HPUX USB ports, and using the UPS port as a serial port

Hi Daniel

1. USB support on hp-ux is still limited to Keyboard, Mouse, DVD ROM etc.... Thus USB to serial conversion option will not help.

2. UPS Port can also NOT be used for Modem. Remote port however can be used for Modem.

If the printer has parallel port , print server can be used to configure it as Network Printer.

Re: HPUX USB ports, and using the UPS port as a serial port

Hi Devender,

Thankyou for this. My understanding was the remote modem port was for remote dial-in to the Management Processor only? The fact that the console/remote/UPS port is on the MP card leads me to believe that this was the case. I'd love to hear otherwise!

What I'm looking to achieve is connecting a modem for dial in/out use from HPUX itself, not just to the MP.

I did some further searching, and found this document. Unfortunately it's specific to a UPS, not a generic serial device.

Hi Daniel,

Here is the manual for modem & terminal configuration. If you connect modem at this remote port you will get MP login only, from here you can go to console which will give you os access. Have a look at this document.

Also if you have some problem with modem, look at this.
