Re: hpvmcreate -P vm-name -a network:adapter-type:[hardware-address]:vswitch:vswitch-name

Emil, for all that are not such familiar with this we should say your script is creating a 8gig large file to be used as virtual disk and a virtual lan based on physical NIC lan1.
Would you agree?

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: hpvmcreate -P vm-name -a network:adapter-type:[hardware-address]:vswitch:vswitch-name

I now have successfully...

# hpvmstatus
[Virtual Machines]
Virtual Machine Name VM # OS Type State #VCPUs #Devs #Nets Memory Runsysid
==================== ===== ======= ========= ====== ===== ===== ======= ========
VM03B 2 HPUX On (EFI) 2 1 1 1 GB 0
VM03A 3 HPUX On (EFI) 2 1 1 1 GB 0

# hpvmstatus
[Virtual Machines]
Virtual Machine Name VM # OS Type State #VCPUs #Devs #Nets Memory Runsysid
==================== ===== ======= ========= ====== ===== ===== ======= ========
VM04A 1 HPUX On (EFI) 2 1 1 1 GB 0
VM04B 2 HPUX On (EFI) 2 1 1 1 GB 0

Now I need to Install 11.23 on this.. and this is not recognizing the Ignite server when did a dbprofile.

Is there something I should Add something to this.

Re: hpvmcreate -P vm-name -a network:adapter-type:[hardware-address]:vswitch:vswitch-name

I was also wondering if these new VM Guests will have a diffetent IP address than the server...

Re: hpvmcreate -P vm-name -a network:adapter-type:[hardware-address]:vswitch:vswitch-name

Yes, each guest will (must) have its own (virtual) MAC address and its own IP address.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: hpvmcreate -P vm-name -a network:adapter-type:[hardware-address]:vswitch:vswitch-name

I have one IP avaliable for VM03B, but i am unable to figure out where I am making a mistake.

The ignite server is working fine.But when I create a dbprofile and netboot it i receive the below error:-

Shell> lanboot select -dn igniteprof

Re: hpvmcreate -P vm-name -a network:adapter-type:[hardware-address]:vswitch:vswitch-name

Please double check the dbprofile.

I repeat what I have posted to your other thread:

The virtual NIC is bound to physical lan0, right?

The physical lan0 is connected to the network, right?

I'm not sure if dbprofile always works with HPVM 03.50, you can try without the dbprofile option (just lanboot select) and adjust the bootptab file on the ignite server with the clients MAC address.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

I have created lan0boot from Add a Boot Option from EFI Boot Maintenance Manager and tried it which failed...

Did you check all things I posted 3 posts ago?

You can alternatively boot from an DVD or ISO image too.

Re: hpvmcreate -P vm-name -a network:adapter-type:[hardware-address]:vswitch:vswitch-name

Hello,

It seems that you forget a backslash :

ignite-defaults:\
ht=ethernet:\
hn:\
dn=domain_name.com:\
gw=10.3.90.1:\
sm=255.255.255.0:\
vm=rfc1048:\
bf=/opt/ignite/boot/nbp.efi:\ <<<===== HERE
bs=48:\
ba

Add this line add the end of your bootptab,delete your VM03A part :

vm3a:tc=ignite-defaults:ip=10.3.90.44:ha=16e699548f24

Otherwise you can check how you've spread your vnic with:

hpvmnet -S name_of_vSwitch

If you want all the detail of the switch try with :
hpvmnet -S name_of_vSwitch -p all

To get all you vswitch just launch a : hpvmnet

Perhaps some of you vSwitch have not been started.

take a lok at your ignite server to see if your bootp daemon is enable.

For avoiding to spend time between looking for network issues or ignite ones, I've installed on the Ignite server "tcpdump".

With this you'll be able to see if your bootp request are arriving to the ignite server or if you have a network issue.(bad vlan,cable troubles,wrong port used,etc....)

http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/hppd/hpux/Networking/Admin/tcpdump-3.9.8/

Once you've installed it try this on your ignite server :

tcpdump -i lanX -vv -n ether host xx:xx:xx:x:xx:xx

with lanX the interface used by your client to contact the server.
and xx:xx:xx:x:xx:xx the MAC adress of the lan card used by your client to contact the server.

I've been able to solve many ignite issue with this little tool.

Don't forget to : inetd -c after modifying /etc/bootptab or /etc/inetd.conf

Hope this helps

Re: hpvmcreate -P vm-name -a network:adapter-type:[hardware-address]:vswitch:vswitch-name

My answer seems to be to late.Sorry.

Have you verify if you don't have strange non printing caracters in your file ?

With vi just type when editing your file : set list . Perhaps it's just that.

Re: hpvmcreate -P vm-name -a network:adapter-type:[hardware-address]:vswitch:vswitch-name

Try to set the hostname (hn) to a value:

hn=vm03A:\

or something.

Maybe you have a syntax error before all this lines, because the log always says "bad hostname".

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: hpvmcreate -P vm-name -a network:adapter-type:[hardware-address]:vswitch:vswitch-name

The system complains about a syntax error - I cannot see any.

So I think you have any un-printable characters somewhere.

Delete your configuration lines and type them again carefully. Include the ds= line.

Hope this helps!

Re: hpvmcreate -P vm-name -a network:adapter-type:[hardware-address]:vswitch:vswitch-name

I agree with Torsten You should have a problem with a non printing caracter as I say before.

According to your problem with tcpdump it's only a path issue. Add to /etc/PATH /usr/local/sbin (You can confirm that with : whereis tcpdump). After logout and login againt you should have it directly.

Before that try with /usr/local/sbin/tcpdump.
Be careful with the syntax, it's not 16E699548F24 but 16:E6:99:54:8F:24. (with 0X before at beginning I can't remember, must try)

Hope this helps.

Re: hpvmcreate -P vm-name -a network:adapter-type:[hardware-address]:vswitch:vswitch-name

Because you asked for a workaround - see

http://docs.hp.com/en/T2767-90105/ch07s02.html

and scroll down to

Virtual NullDVDs

Shutdown the host, connect the external DVD drive, boot up and check with ioscan for the drive.
Create a virtual nullDVD for the guest.

# hpvmmodify -P -a dvd:scsi::null:/dev/rdsk/cXtYdZ

Insert the media into the drive, go to the vMP and use

insert

command to make the DVD accessible to the guest. Install the OS.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
