HPVUE action errors

I have just added the HP-UX 10.20 ACE 12/99 and HP-UX 10.20 Support Plus 06/00 patch bundles to a C160 workstation using the "Match what system has" functionality. After VUE login I get errors trying to use the front panel actions. If I select the file manger I get Action: OpenHome Dir [Error] (no such tool registered). I get the same error for the OpenTrash and OpenPersonalToolbox actions. If I select the TERMINAL or EXIT_SESSION actions I get [Error} This action does not exist. If I select the Edit action nothing happens.

Now for the really weird part. If I start vuefile from an hpterm it works and then the OpenHomeDir, OpenTrash and OpenPersonalToolbox actions work OK. If I start vuepad it will work but the Edit action may or may not.

To logout I have to find the vuesession PID and kill it.

I suspect some part of Vue is not configured properly or that some of CDE has crept onto my system. Any ideas?

Re: HPVUE action errors

Thanks for such a detailed response. I tried everything in the order you wrote it although I don't understand point 4. There are no errors being logged to any of the files. Nothing was wrong or made a difference until I tried the last item: renaming .vue and .vueprofile and letting the system create new ones. This solved half the problem. All the vuefile related errors (including trash and toolbox) as well as the vuepad error were corrected. I still get the "this action does not exist" error for Mailer, Exit_Session, Terminal and Lock_Display actions.

We are not using Softbench so that should not be a concern.

Re: HPVUE action errors

sounds daft but could you try re setting the hostname via set_parms and see what happens ? :

also try VUE's diagnotic tool :

run /usr/contrib/bin/X11/dr_vue and correct any warnings or errors generated if you have not done so already.

Re: HPVUE action errors

I tried set_parms, no effect.

Attached is the output from dr_vue with my comments inserted in it. Maybe you can see something I do not. It complains about a few file permissions but they appear to be correct.

Two files that may not have the correct contents are nsswitch.conf and vue.softinit. They are listed in the attached file as well. Thanks!

Re: HPVUE action errors

I have got just about everything sorted out now. The only problem left is with vuepad. I can only start 2 instances, doesn't matter if I start them from the front panel or from the edit text actions or the command line. If I attempt to start several vuepads then close one of the open ones all the blocked ones will open up. There is nothing being logged to $HOME/.vue/errorlog. There is an entry in errorlog.old "wuewm: error writing message length to Message Sewrver [ENOENT (2)] No such file or directory". This is evidently being written during the logout process as there is never an errorlog file during the session. This entry is there even if the user just logs in and logs back out.
