I/O issues after install of March 2004 Bundle on 11.0 server

Install of March 2004 patch bundle was running Ok, and immediatly we were facing very high disk I/O and longer backups. We're using Progress database and Progress "probackup" tool. Daily operations take 3 to 4 times more time to proceed. Glance show huge logical I/Os.

100% sure !
I applied the patches during the last Christmas vacations ... and nobody from the application team was present before and after the patch install ...

Re: I/O issues after install of March 2004 Bundle on 11.0 server

There are still other factors that need to be considered.

There could be flooding on your fabric network. There could be scsi issues introduced by the patch set. There could be asyncrhonous i/o issues.

Few recommendations:

Read the notes on the patch set you installed. There may be individual, newer patches that supersede and resolve this issue.

If you are in a hurry June or September 2004 might be worth a try.

Check the san and scsi networks.

Check with the database vendor and see if they have had and resolved this issue after install of the March patchset.

In that case all that I can think of is that the system may have lost the SCSI rate setting for the tape drive interface card or HBA, if you powered the machine off and on again. Reboot and interrupt the boot sequence, go into SCSI and check the settings to make sure it is correct for your bus and tape drive ie FAST or ULTRA.

Is the IO heavy on any particular disk or is the IO generally high?? Probably, you can check if there are any disk problem just to rule out the possiblity of disk problem. If no then as said earlier, there may be some patch sets which probably supersedes the older versions, and the problem may be because of that.

Re: I/O issues after install of March 2004 Bundle on 11.0 server

There are a lot of patches that have to do with filesystem performance that have come out since then.

If you go to the Patch website, you should be able to get a patch analysis for your system and get a more recent bundle that will fix that issue.
