Identifying Model/Part Numbers Class of server??
Hello Admins:
I am new to my shop and maintenance time is coming up. I need to develop a spreadsheet of the type of equipment I have. Is there a way of finding out what type of a class a server is? Example: I have a k400 that I know was upgraded to a k460. How can I find that out via a command prompt without having to rely on what the product stamp reports on the front panel of the server? Further, is there a way (like with ioscan?) to find out the hp part numbers of equipment attached to my server? Finally, is there a simple explanation of how HP identifies machines? I hear 9000 server K460 ..yadda...yadda...What do all the numbers mean? Do I have a 9000 system or k460? I am sure it is a logical system but the undertanding eludes me.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Identifying Model/Part Numbers Class of server??
The proper way to identify your server is with the model command.
There is a great way to find out the part numbers of all your items on your server - your HP support contract. Contracturally they hold all this info. Once a year they submit it via email or paper copy to your IT manager or whoever looks after your companies support contracts (so you can pay HP lots of money to support it all !)
On it is the HP part/model number of every part that should be on your server. As youve got HP to modify them over the years HP's job is to update it.
We just got our annual renewal of our HP support contract via email from HP to review. Found a couple of mistakes so sent it back to be fixed.

Re: Identifying Model/Part Numbers Class of server??
Michael:
# model #...gives you the actual model
"9000" machines run HP-UX whereas "3000"s run the proprietary MPE operating system.
"800" series are servers whereas "700" are workstations.
'ioscan' is your "first", most basic description of the hardware present.
