Ignite and replace hard disk

Hello all,

One our our servers fails to reboot after we installed patch PHSS_34392.
We determined it was a poor OS disk (vg00) and have been attempting to replace the disk and recover from an Ignite tape.

How similar must the original and replacement disks be? Do they have to have the exact same scsi rate, rotation speed and size in order to recover with Ignite? or will Ignite overwrite system files with bad I/O configuration information?

I think we tried to replace a 15kRPM drive with a 10krpm drive and nothing is working.

Did we damage the 10kRPM drive? How can we verify?

What is the proper procedure to replace a disk with a different type drive when you have no OS?

Thanks

Re: Ignite and replace hard disk

Ignite doesn't care about the disk type. It doesn't really matter if the disk is larger, smaller, faster or slower. The only thing that really matters is that you have enough capacity for your VG00 that you are trying to recover.

You would not damage a drive just by trying to recover to it, unless you did something very strange.

What sort of problems are you now seeing?

Re: Ignite and replace hard disk

Patrick,
quick response...

Always the same while attempting to boot:

- unhandled phase mismatch
- a couple of lbolts
- system panic with "I/O system hang"

We have someone form HP coming tomorrow but having weekday business hours support, we are trying to see what we can do meanwhile.

Re: Ignite and replace hard disk

What was the SPECIFIC model of the original drive and what is the SPECIFIC model of the new drive?

It is remotely possible that you have replaced an LVD drive with an HVD drive. The two protocols are vastly different and completely incompatible.

Re: Ignite and replace hard disk

looking at the disk itself, we replaced a
36GB 15000 RPM wide ultra320 scsi model ST336754LC firmware HPC2
by
36GB 10000 RPM wide ultra320 scsi model ST373207LC#36 firmware HPC1

Re: Ignite and replace hard disk

OK, the disks are compatible. 2 more things that come to mind:

1) The "new" disk could be bad as well.

2) I suppose it is possible that it is a firmware issue - HPC2 vs. HPC1

I think at this point I would lean more towards the "new" disk being bad. Do you have another drive you can try?

Re: Ignite and replace hard disk

It turns out we had a bad disk, other than the one we suspected, and a bad dlt80 tape drive...

Even the HP techs were baffled and were recommending a motherboard replacement.

So we are recovering from Ignite and past backup.

Take care
