Re: Ignite Backup on DVD Media

If you are on 11.11, you can't be on rx4640, so which is correct? (Unless you have an ignite server?)

(I'm asking the moderators to move this to a more appropriate place.)

Re: Ignite Backup on DVD Media

I've been down this road before where I wanted to put all my Ignite images onto DVD.

I stopped the idea altogether because:

1) Very seldom did I ever get an image to fit. = TIME WASTED

2) When it did fit the media often became unusable.= TIME WASTED

3) Some brands of DVD seemed to work better than others. = TIME WASTED

4) Ended up with stacks of DVD's = ENVIRONMENTAL WASTE

5) Boss didn't like to spend money locking up the stacks of DVDs. = NO RAISE lol :)

6) Embraced the concept of a server dedicated to images (Ignite Server)

Once my boss saw all the effort/cost for creating, storing, administering all the DVD images it was a no brainer to go with an Ignite server.

Storage was cheap so we dedicated a couple hundred gig to store weekly ignites of our most important images.

Had another area for storing "one off" images made before system changes.

The admin hassle was gone. And much more flexibility with creating / restoring images was available.

Once we had it for awhile and more $$ was there eventually moved to a separate subnet for Igniting images.

As well moved the Ignite server to our DR site and instantly had offsite storage of our systems. Where the images could be restored back to Head office if needed. Or if head office disappeared we could rebuild quite literally the company at the DR site.

In short...Do you really need to use DVD?

Just my 1 cent worth.

Cheers

(p.s. We first started off with a cheap HP workstation as the Ignite with a Terabyte of storage (Raid 5) due to lack of $$. Not ideal but the data was there.)
The Devil is in the detail.
