ignite boot

Hello - is there a way to use an ignite tape as a type of "bootable image" - one that can start the machine but does not overwrite any of the root disk? We have a machine that is hanging at boot and we wanted to try the ignite disk without actually overwriteing the root disk on the machine. Thanks

Can you boot it from cd?

provided your server can see the tape drive this ignite tape is in, prior to the boot time, i.e., tape drive is directly attached to a scsi port on the server, not a SAN connected device, yes you can.

assuming you are on a PA-RISC machine, you will need to interrupt the boot when presented with option of pressing any key in 10 seconds, by doing so. Then you need to type SEARCH and hot enter to find bootable devices connected to your system.

Assuming your tape drive presented itself as P4 line item, you will type BOOT P4 and hit enter.

Provided you have a good ignite tape, in a few minutes you will be presented with an interactive install menu (again provided your ignite tape is not made for non-interactive session)

At this point, you can choose to run a recovery shell instead of a full blown install process to figure out what is wrong with your existing system.
