Ignite - make_recovery_tape - to larger disks

Hi All,
Have used make_recovery_tape before to rebuild / reload systems but on one of my older boxes (D250) wanted to replace the 2 Hot Swap 2 Gig drives with 2 Hot Swap 4 Gig drives and it is not allowing me to do so and because its a D250 and not the D3XX series the bottom three slots are not connected.
The drives come out of another D250 that we have decomissioned but should be good to go. Used the following to backup.

/opt/ignite/bin/make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 -I

It complains about volume group being attached to root / /stand not being able to relocate bad sectors and never lets me complete the reload

It appears you have one or more bad blocks
on an unmirroed partition.
You likely have to reboot to clear the bad
block problem.
You should consider running fsck with bad
block checking after you have made the
recovery tape.

Re: Ignite - make_recovery_tape - to larger disks

Hi Bill,
Thanks for responding. The make_recover_tape appeared to run ok on the original disks but do not want to restore to the replacement disks.

Should I fsck the original disks and run another make_tape_recovery then put the replacement disks in and retry the restore of the make_recovery_tape or perhaps boot into maintenance mode and run the fsck on the replacement disks?

Run fsck on the new disks. Depending
on the placement of the bad blocks you
may not be able to recover to them.

You might also try swapping the disks between
slots.

If you hot swapped the disks into place,
the kernel may not recognize the new
geometry correctly. I would shutdown
and power off before installing the larger
disks.

The techs want to shut down and power off
when replacing failed disks.

Sounds like a winner...the new disks have some bad blocks and will need to clean them up before they can be restored to.

Thanks Bill!
