Hi people, i wanted to ask as to how do u individually take ignite images of a particular filesystem eg just /var.
And about recovery what commands do u use for recovery of all the volume group or for just a single filesystem.
Thanks alot.

Re: ignite query

That is really outside of Ignite's intended purpose, which is to provide a way to recover you operating system in case of failure. It is not intended as a general backup tool, it is a recovery tool.

Re: ignite query

Well, i want to clear another thing while i am at it. How do u rewind a tape. And lets say i want to write to a particular sector of a tape, how do i do it. In short how do i control my tape with respect to rewinding it, taking it to a particular point, things like that.....

So, i gather from whta u say that i cannot take particular filessytems recovery just the whole volume group???
Thanks.

Re: ignite query

Hi:

With regard to Ignite, as Pete first said, it is intended as a recovery tool for vg00, not as a backup tool, per se.

That said, you can exclude and include directories or files as well as whole volume groups.

I maintain my vg00 with only the standard HP-UX filesystems and virtually nothing else. I use the following to create an Ignite make_tape_recovery image:

# make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 -I -v -a /dev/rmt/0mn

If I wished, I could add additional options, like:

-x exclude=/var/logs
-x exclude=/temp_patch_dir

Re: ignite query

While the mt command can indeed position a tape to a record on a tape, this feature is of no use because backup programs like tar, cpio, pax, fbackup, etc, do not store each disk file as a separate file on the tape. Instead, one long tape file is created for the archive. Although not recommened, you can append additional backup sets to the end of a tape using the mt command and the no-rewind-on-close device file.

So Ignite is used only to backup the boot disk so in case of loss or damage, the boot disk can be restored. The rest of the disks would then be protected with separate backups using fbackup. fbackup/frestore can easily restore individual files and directories.
