Ignite recovery on rp3410

Hi,
We are trying to restore the ignite tape created on a rp3440 server to a fresh rp3410 server.
Our problem is that at console on search it can not see the path of tape drive. We booted rp3410 server from disk in single user mode and can see the path of tape drive. But it is does not appear in 'search'
We removed the terminator on drive side, now 'search' can see the tape path 'P3 - 0/1/1/1.3.0' but when boot through path P3, booting is failed with fatal error. If now 'search' path P# with 0/1/1/1.3.0 does not appear. If power off/on tape unit, then tape path appear but fails to boot and path disappears again.

If connect the terminator then tape device path is not seen at all.

Please suggest why is this happening or what are we missing?

Thanks
Rakesh

Sounds like you have a tape hardware problem.

Re: Ignite recovery on rp3410

The need of a terminator and the model depend on the model of tape drive, but you did not tell what it is.

Just try to boot from tape without search.

menu> bo 0/1/1/1.3.0

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Ignite recovery on rp3410

This is external tape drive HP StorageWorks DAT72 and is being shared with 2-3 systems.

On this tape drive we made Ignite backup of rp3440 server with two internal 73GB HDDs. Now we want to restore this backup to a fresh rp3410 server with two internal 73GB HDDs.

When we booted rp3410 server 'ioscan -funC tape' shows tape device with P3 path 0/1/1/1.3.0 'CLAIMED'

We tried both 'bo p3 and bo 0/1/1/1.3.0' in both case server fails to boot.

Re: Ignite recovery on rp3410

when you run ioscan -fnC tape do you have a special file attach with your hardware path?
if not you must run insf for activing a special file.
another suggestion is to run a tar command in your rp3410 with some file, and see the result.

Re: Ignite recovery on rp3410

Hi Rakesh,

On the new rp3410, where do you connect the external to? Is it to additional SCSI card or on the port that came with the server? The 2 internal disk, can you give the h/w path?

Sandy

Re: Ignite recovery on rp3410

I have booted the rp3410 server through hardisk using factory installed HPUX OS but I want to restore the Ingnite image.

'ioscan -funC disk' displays - (essential info)
dsk 0 0/0/2/0.0.0.0 TEAC /dev/disk/c0t0d0
dsk 1 0/1/1/0.0.0 HP73.4 /dev/disk/c2t0d0
dsk 2 0/1/1/0.1.0 HP73.4 /dev/disk/c2t1d0

'ioscan -funC tape' displays -
tape 0 0/1/1/1.3.0 HP C7438A /dev/rmt/0m

All devices are in CLAIMED state. I am able to take backup through tar and is working OK. I am connectint tape drive to the port that comes with serevr - SCSI LVD/SE(under power supplies)

Please explain more cleary!

Shared between servers and a terminator attached? How do you do this?

Just in case - **if** the tape is shared, does both servers have still SCSI ID 7 ???

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
