IKE Packet Processing

Could someone explain to me what IKE is?
In a short winded way please? I have no idea.

IKE (Internet Key Exchange) is part of the protocol used for IPsec and VPN communication. VPN encapsulates network packets using encryption and IKE packets are part of the encryption key negotiation between the two ends of the connection.
