increase Max PE per PV in vg00

Hello,

Just replaced two 18G internal disks with two 146GB internal disks. These disks contain the OS AND the DB. (bad staging - I know). Max PE per PV was set on vg00 to 4350. Upon replacing the disks, can still only see +/- 17.4GB. Is there any way to modify this outside of Ignite-UX? If not, what would be the procedure for doing so?

Thanks!

Re: increase Max PE per PV in vg00

Hi:

What you see (less than what you now physically have) is what you get!

The geometry of the LVM structures are fixed at the time of a 'vgcreate'. Your problem is common. You cannot change the 'max_pe', 'max_pv' nor 'pe_size' without recreating the volume group from scratch. For vg00, yes, the best way is to re-Ignite.

Re: increase Max PE per PV in vg00

Nope, not really.

Procedure:

1) Create a couple of make_tape_recovery tapes, preferably with DB down.

2) Boot from said tapes. When the Ignite interface comes up, it should automagically configure for the entire disk size. You can further tweak the parameters from an option in the FILESYSTEM tab (I think).

3) Let the rebuild proceed.

Re: increase Max PE per PV in vg00

The only way you can change these LVM parameters are by recreating the volume groups. Since you have to do this on the root VG - vg00 - your best bet would be to re-install the OS and apps on this VG from your recovery Ignite tape. During LVM configuration of the new installation, you can change these LVM parameters.

Re: increase Max PE per PV in vg00

Hi McKesson,

The max_pe parametre cannot be changed once VG created. Options are,

1. Recreation of VG
2. Ignite.

Re: increase Max PE per PV in vg00

There is an unsupported (internal?) HP Tool:

vgmodify - modify an LVM volume group's attributes.

SYNOPSIS

/usr/sbin/vgmodify [-e MaxPhysicalExtents | -d DiskSize] [-p MaxPhysicalVolumes] [-l MaxLogicalVolumes] [-r] VolumeGroupName [pv_path] [pv_path] [.....]

...

for HP-UX 11i, that tool can do what you need.
You may ask your HP-Support contact and ask for that tool and may be special instructions an limitations.

If you do I on your onwn be care full an prepared for the Ignite-UX recovery if the tool fails.

Re: increase Max PE per PV in vg00

Hi,

You can change the Max PE by :

A. backup your vgXX, re-create vgXX, restore vgXX (it's really troublesome, especially if this one is vg00).

OR

B. Ignite/UX software

Below is the example with Ignite/UX software :

1. Perform a full system backup

2. Create a current make_tape_recovery

#make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 -a /dev/rmt/1mn -I -v

3. Boot system from make_tape_recovery

- Interrupt system on the way up

- Search for bootable device (see ipl)

- boot P# (Sequential)

- Do not interact with IPL

- From the Welcome to Ignite-UX screen Select "Install HP-UX"

- From the "User Interface and Media Options" menu
Select "Media Only Installation"

5. Do all necessary file system changes: extending vg00,
increasing the size logical volumes and changing file system types

If there is more than one drive in vg00, it is possible that the
logical volumes can complain about disk space, if the hardware paths
have changed. Even if the new drive is bigger. If this happens, do
this:

- From the "Filesystem" tab choose"Additional Tasks"

- Select "Logical Volume Paramters"

- Select "Disk Mapping" for the logical volumes that are complaining

- Select "Any" disk instead of "Assigned" disk.

- Go back to "Additional Tasks"

- Select "Volume Group Parameters"

- From the "Advanced Volume Group Parameters" menu highlight
vg00
and select Modify

- Change max_physical_extends to appropriate value or more if needed.

- Select "Go"

Hope this information can help you.

Cheers,

Re: increase Max PE per PV in vg00

Ignite is your best option.
vgmodify is a posibility but unsupported. But it will not hurt to try it before restoring the Ignite backup.
