Increasing space for /usr Filesystem?

Hi All,

/usr is 94% and just wanted to know , can it be done online.

# bdf | grep usr
Filesystem kbytes used avail %used Mounted on
/dev/vg00/lvol8 1146880 1079056 67344 94% /usr

"Online features of the VxFS File System" has installed. & SAP is running on the system.
OS= hp-ux 11.11 , N4000-55.

Re: Increasing space for /usr Filesystem?

It can - if you have space in vg00...

Do a vgdisplay -v vg00

Re: Increasing space for /usr Filesystem?

Hello

Yes Geoff is right that if you have online JFS installed and of course providing there is sufficient space in VG00 there is nothing to stop you increasing this via SAM or the lvextend command.

Hope this helps

Re: Increasing space for /usr Filesystem?

Hi ,

You can do with Online JFS, if you have free space on vg00 . You can check :
# vgdisplay -f /dev/vg00 | grep -i free

Re: Increasing space for /usr Filesystem?

Hi ,
Mistake in my last post,

It should be:

# vgdisplay -v /dev/vg00 ,

And check fro Free PE.

Re: Increasing space for /usr Filesystem?

hi,

you can check this:

# vgdisplay -v /dev/vg00 | egrep '(PV Name | Free)'

Then use lvextend and fsadm to increase space.
# lvextend -L Total_sizeinMB /dev/vg00/lvol8

Use fsadm to extend the filesytem
# fsadm -F vxfs -b 1024*sizeinMB /usr

Re: Increasing space for /usr Filesystem?

I have free space in vg00 :
$ vgdisplay -v /dev/vg00 | egrep '(PV Name | Free)'
PV Name /dev/dsk/c2t6d0
Free PE 481
PV Name /dev/dsk/c1t6d0
Free PE 570

thanks all.

Re: Increasing space for /usr Filesystem?

Hi,

You can very well extend it online, provided that you have sufficient free PEs avaiable in vg00. You may have check , why the filesystem has become 94%. What is the growth rate of the fileystem, is it normal or an abnormal one. Just analyse the history before you decide to simply increase the fs size.

Re: Increasing space for /usr Filesystem?

Hi,

Do the following steps..

#vgdisplay -v vg00

u can see the free space available in vg00. if it is showing PE 481, it means 481x4=1924 MB free space available in ur vg00.
#lvextend -L 1924 /dev/vg00/lvol8
#fsadm -F vxfx -b 1924 /usr

#bdf |grep usr (see the current space available in /usr).

cheers.

Re: Increasing space for /usr Filesystem?

hi,

provided u have online JFS, this can be done.

# swlist -l product|grep OnlineJFS

if u confirm to have online JFS:

# lvextend -l /dev/vg00/lvol8
# fsadm -F vxfs -b /usr

e.g. taking that the current PE is 280 and u will be using 200 of existing 1051 PE (where size of each PE is 4MB) :

# lvextend -l 480 /dev/vg00/lvol8
# fsadm -F vxfs -b 1966080 /usr

regards.
