Increasing vxfs filesystem.
We have installed HP-UX 11.0 on L2000 server, after complete installation downloaded latest standard patch bundle from HP. During analysis phase installation stopped due to disk space in /var partition. I am unable to increase /dev/vg00/lvol8 partition.
An error occures :-
"Logical volume /dev/vg00/lvol8 is currently mounted on /var and could not be unmounted. The LV cannot be extended until the file system is able to be unmounted."
Please advise how to extend filesystems
/,/var,/usr and /opt.
Thanks in adv..
Venkatakrishna.

Re: Increasing vxfs filesystem.
you will have to reboot and goto single user mode, then extend it. (lvextend and extendfs)
If you OnlineJFS product you can extend it online.
lvextend and fsadm

Re: Increasing vxfs filesystem.
That has to be contiguous and can not be extended by normal means.
Here is a process.
make an Ignite backup:
make_tape_recovery
Boot the box from the serial or web console
Interupt the boot at the 10 second prompt
sea
look for a sequential device, that will be the tape drive.
bo p4 if the sequential device is p4
N do not interact
There will be a prompt for manual Ignite/install configuration a couple of minutes after boot.
Hit a key.
You are now in the ignite install interface. Adjust upwards the size of the filesytems. Leave lots of extra room for /var print spoolers have a way of hammering it.
Realistically, I have a few questions. why 11.00 which is nearly obsolete. 11.11 has many more features and is compatible with most application software.
You are so close to the beginning of the process you might just want to do the install over, allowing more room for the filesystems you are having issues with.

Re: Increasing vxfs filesystem.
Since you ahve to goto single to fix /var... I might consider taking 2 ignite backups and then redoing all of vg00...
You may not have the means to do that now, but I would strongly consider it. Since you are needing to increase /var.
--------------------------------------------------------
BTW, have you ensured you removed all unneeded files on /var? I saved nearly a GB when i removed old files that were nearly 2 years old
