init 0 VS shutdown

Hi people,
I'm not sure about the difference of the init 0 and shutdown here.
Any idea on when to use them?
Thanks.

Re: init 0 VS shutdown

Hi,

Have a look at the man page for 'init'.
It clearly states that
Run levels in HP-UX are defined as follows:

0 Shut down HP-UX.

Also the run levels are defined from iniitab and the directories of /sbin/rcN.d where programs are started and shutdown.

Re: init 0 VS shutdown

Hi June,

Not sure how much more justification can i give more than what the man pages tell us but anyway.

init 0 - shuts down the machine
shutdown - without any options takes the machine to a single user mode, -r option reboots the machine, -h option halts the machine. shutdown is more cleaner, shuts all the applications/unmounts the filesystems etc, users other than root, have to be mentioned in /etc/shutdown.allow can shut the machine down)
