Re: INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly (machine is not booting)

Right after the dmesg output, there is a more serious error than the init respawn messages. Fix that and likely the other errors will cease as well.

"/sbin/ioinitrc:
Unable to mount /stand - please check entries in /etc/fstab"

Looks like you have a problem with the kernel here. In syslog.log are there errors that point to a failing disk? Possibly the lvlnboot information is incorrect?

Re: INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly (machine is not booting)

Shalom,

Some notes:

1) /stand must be HFS below 11i v2. If you have an earlier version of HP-UX and did /stand as vxfs its game over, install the OS again.

2) With regards to inittab, have you manually modified it? Reverse the changes once you get your system to boot.

Hi,

Can you please give the output of the following command..

grep -i stand /etc/fstab

Re: INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly (machine is not booting)

These messages also point to a problem with the kernel. See "Can't get kernel namelist"

If /stand can't be mounted, you don't have access to the kernel (vmunix), therefore nothing can be found.

What has happened to the kernel? Bad disk? Bad kernel? Solve the kernel issue and your other messages will be resolved.

Re: INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly (machine is not booting)

In single user mode type this:

mount -a

See if you get an error message about /etc/fstab.

It's quite possible that you have a bad line in there.

Clearly /usr isn't getting mounted later in the process.

Re: INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly (machine is not booting)

I'm in total agreement with Cheryl here.

There is something wrong with the disk /stand sits on, or someone coverted the filesystem to vxfs.

Knowing what happened to the system will get you 75% of the way towards fixing it.

If it was not you, talk to your colleagues or operations department.

This problem is fixable, but you may find it easier to re-install the OS, depending on how many applications and customizations are present.
