Init single reboot with no /etc/passwd

[HPUX boot Init Single]

Seems my HPUX box has no the /etc/passwd anymore, Can I boot it through IS mode anyway ? Should I use some CD to do that ?

You should be able to boot in single user mode.

Hi:

If you are still logged in, you could copy '/usr/newconfig/etc/passwd' as '/etc/passwd' and at least regain the standard accounts.

If the system is up and running why don't you try to put the file through ftp /sftp / scp from last good backup?

If you still not able to access the server by any of the above method, then boot into single user mode, mount the usr filesystem, then copy the '/usr/newconfig/etc/passwd' to /etc/passwd.

After that change the root password using passwd command reboot it. Once rebooted recover the /etc/passwd from last backup if you have one.

Booting in Single User Mode, doesn't prompt for root Password,

so you can interupt the boot Sequence
