inittab and sam HELP
Hi,
I would appreciate it very much if someone offer some help:
I need to change /dev/tty0p1 from terminal type to modem type so that 3rd party ups can be installed, or add a modem device using port1.
sam looks like:
--------
xx /dev/console Console 10/4/0 0 0 ^ x
xx /dev/tty0p1 Terminal 10/4/0 1 2400 x
xx /dev/ttyd0p7 Modem 10/4/0 7 2400 x
xx /dev/tty1p0 Terminal 10/4/16 0 9600 x
xx
I can not add a modem, the messages are: "there are no available ports on the mux/serial devices. Note: one of the possible reasons this may happen is if your are tyring to add a modem to a mux port that doesn't support modem"
Can I edit inittab, or do sth on sam to make port1 to work as a modem device? I just find the /dev/tty0p1 as a terminal is not editable on sam.
I am waiting for guru's confirmation for my next move. Please Help!
Thanks a lot,
Steven

Re: inittab and sam HELP
Steven,
You can remove the terminal device /dev/tty0p1 from SAM and the add it as a modem port /dev/ttyd0p1.
Hope this solves your problem.

Re: inittab and sam HELP
Thanks for the help.
Would sam remove tty0p1 and add one one device? Why inittab editing would not change?
I tried editing inittab by comment out tty0p1 line, then sam would not see it. But adding one more device, sam error message is the same as "not more port, or can not be used for modem, etc.."
Please help.
Thanks,
Steven

Re: inittab and sam HELP
Steven,
I hope you did a "init q" after editing the /etc/inittab file for the changes to take effect.Normally even though if you have connected the console to the console port on the system, the port 1 on the mux card cannot be used, as it is reserved for the console.
You can use sam to remove the terminal config from one of the ports and configure the same port as modem port.
Goodluck.
