Install 11i Version2

I am testing an update of a system from 11i ver 1 to 11i version2. I keep getting the following error:

[ltchp7:/cdrom]# swinstall -s /cdrom HPUX11i-OE

======= 12/21/04 11:23:22 EST BEGIN swinstall SESSION

"/var/tmp/swagent.log" on this host for more information.

* Selection had errors.

======= 12/21/04 11:23:34 EST END swinstall SESSION (non-interactive)
(jobid=ltchp7-0065)

Also, when I look into the /cdrom/HPUX11i-OE directory on the cdrom, it is empty. Not sure whats going on. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Install 11i Version2

What model system is this? Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

As far as I know 11iv2 is 64-bit only. I don't think there's a 32-bit version available.

Re: Install 11i Version2

My understanding is that 32 bit systems can not be upgraded to HP-UX 11i v2.

I don't know HP's long term plans, but I poked around on the release DVD-ROM and found no evidence of anything that was 32 bit.

Re: Install 11i Version2

Robert,

I believe you've probably already seen this, and you're aware that it's exclusively 64 bit, and it's exclusively certain hardware, but as far as requirements to install v2, here's the list:

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12079_div/12079_div.HTML#Overview

Assuming that you've satisfied all the above, I would dare to say that a call to HP might be in order.

Re: Install 11i Version2

Okay.

K570

Not supported but install should be possible.

Have to have enough memroy, and I'd like to see the log file referred to by the error you have posted.

Also the release I got was on DVD-ROM. Is the CD drive in the K570 a DVD-ROM?

Re: Install 11i Version2

Pete's link had the answer:

"
Supported HP 9000 Server Models
Superdome/PA (incl. 128w SMP)
rp8400 & rp7400 series
rp5400 & rp4400 series
rp3440 & rp2400 series
64-bit A-class servers, L-class, N-class
Up to 1TB memory for Superdome
Supported backplanes: PCI or newer, e.g., PCI-X
"

K class is not supported.

Re: Install 11i Version2

Just an FYI -- Just because it is not "OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED" does not mean it won't work. I have 11iv2 for PA-RISC installed and running on a C3000 workstation and NO workstations are officially supported.

Re: Install 11i Version2

Yes DVD ROM, I had to install it from another machine.

I figured I could still install ver 2 eventhough it is not supported.

Re: Install 11i Version2

Steve makes an excellent point about the DVD vs CD issue. My old K570 certainly didn't have a DVD drive.

Re: Install 11i Version2

Do I need a license key.
When I run swinstall in interactive mode, I only see a few products to install.

If I do a 'ls -l /cdrom' I see all kinds of products.

Is this a licensing issue?

Re: Install 11i Version2

When you said you were testing an 'update', did you mean you were trying a simple 'swinstall' command or the 'update-ux' command?

If you are just trying swinstall, you will see nothing. 11i1 is 11.11. 11i2 is 11.23. swinstall cmd will recognize nothing to install between these 2 releases.

Re: Install 11i Version2

I ran,

swinstall -s /cdrom HPUX11i-OE

Why when I look into the cdrom files, I see nothing unde the OS packages?

But under other products I see files?

Re: Install 11i Version2

To pile on, if you stick a DVD a CD-ROM and mount it, it will mount but you won't see anything on it.

Sounds like the issue, except the isntall should never start, which it may be in this situation.

Anyone want to try this to verify. HP swapped out my last ROM drive for DVD 10 days ago.

Re: Install 11i Version2

Robert,

I'm confused. Are you upgrading or installing? I've never heard of, or contemplated trying, running swinstall from the command line to install the Operating System. Not having run an upgrade since way back in the 10.0 days, I can't say anything about how that is normally done, but I have to wonder if the reason you're not seeing any filesets is because of the environment in which you're running.

Can you try a cold install - booting from the CD?

Re: Install 11i Version2

Yes, it will boot from the CD.

I want to do an update, not a cold install like I normally do.

Do I use the udpate-ux command to initiate the upgrade from CD or the swinstall command?

Re: Install 11i Version2

OK, just swinstalling 11iv2 ain't gonna work. If you are trying to upgrade you MUST use the update-ux command.

Have a read through Chapter 6 of the "Installation and Update Guide HP-UX 11i Version 2". It details how to do what you want to do.

It would probably be better if you read through the whole manual as it describes steps you MUST take to make your system ready to update to 11iv2.

The manual is available here:

HTML format: http://docs.hp.com/en/5990-8144/index.html

PDF format: http://docs.hp.com/en/5990-8144/5990-8144.pdf

You should have much better luck following the instructions in this manual.

Re: Install 11i Version2

Ok I got it.

Hardware is not valid for an install.

Re: Install 11i Version2

You should be able to do a cold install to that hardware though. As I said above, I installed 11iv2 on a C3000, which definitely is not officially supported.

Re: Install 11i Version2

Just a reminder to all those folks installing 11.23pi/11iv2' on unsupported hardware - just as happened with the unsupported systems on 11.0 where things broke at the first SCSI patch, at any point stuff may stop working with a patch or what have you.

Likely as not you know that already, but it seemed worth explicitly stating regardless.

Re: Install 11i Version2

Just in case someone was wondering. I tried to do a cold install on the same system. It tries to boot off of the CD. I get the boot xxxxx install; message, but then it just hangs.
