When you say "mistake", I now have no idea what command you are talking about? gunzip? file? tar?
Again: What does "file hptape.tar" show?

Re: install firmeware
"g[un]zip" or "tar", and you can't ask a
clear question, then I don't think that I'd
want you touching any of _my_ firmware.

Re: install firmeware
What server model do you have?
What is the current firmware?
What is the problem?
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: install firmeware
# tar -xvf
I would recommend to use LTT for hp-ux:
http://www.hp.com/support/tapetools
Here is the firmware bundle:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=316040&prodNameId=463657&swEnvOID=7&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=co-12811-34
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: install firmeware
/opt/ltt/firmware
otherwise it won't work.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: install firmeware
2) either in your current directory or in /opt/ltt/firmware - this depends on the bundle
Read the release notes about this bundle:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=316040&swItem=co-12811-34&prodNameId=463657&swEnvOID=7&swLang=8&taskId=135&mode=4&idx=0
...
..Installation Instructions
Untar the firmware tar bundle:
tar -xvf ltt_msl_
The firmware files will be unpacked to the default firmware directory for HP L&TT (/opt/ltt/firmware)
Use HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools (HP L&TT) to download firmware to the devices.
NOTE: Once download has started do NOT power off unit or diagnostic until the firmware download is complete otherwise the unit could be left in a non-usable state.
...
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
