If your doing a fresh installation, the system
will give a warning before overwriting any disk
that was previously used. So I can help more,
what model machine are you using and what size
are the disks? Does the machine currently have a system on any other disks that you wish to keep?

I would use the advanced installation option
from the first screen (see p44/45 of the install guide, so that you can define the amount of disk space to be used for each logical volume. By default the install requires about 4Gb of disk. Here is a link to the manual that I'm using.
