installation of glance from CD
I am an HP newbie and need to install the glance trial version to my HP workstation. How do I go about it? I finally found the CD that I needed, but don't have a clue as to how to install it.
Any help?
Thanks,
Steve Colbert

Re: installation of glance from CD
It's rather easy, insert your Applications CD into the drive and mount it using the mount command.
It's usually:
mount /dev/dsk/c1t2d0 (or whatever) /SD_CDROM (or /cdrom)
then you invoke 'swinstall'. This is the interactive version. You select the source (the CDROM in your case). A list of packages will be displayed. Hilight the desired package with the spacebar (or by clicking if using a GUI) then

Re: installation of glance from CD
Try this:
1) Insert CD on the drive
2) Mount the CD drive
# mount /dev/dsk/cxtydz /cdrom
3) Run swinstall
# swinstall
4) Select target "local CD drive"
5) Select the target path ( path of installation directory)
6) The window will now display all products.
7) Select the GlancePlus trial version from that list.
8) Go to Actions -> Mark for install
9) Go to Actions -> Install
10) Carefully follow the instructions

Re: installation of glance from CD
fOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW :
1. Insert CD in to CD Drive.
2. Run following command from root prompt
# ioscan -fnCdisk
3. Identify raw for CD/DVD drive. and note down the disk device name that will be something like this ../dev/dsk/c0t2d0....or so.
4. mount cd drive to a directory.
# mount /dev/dsk/c0t2d0 /SD_CDROM
5. Now your CD contents will be under /SD_CDROM.
6. Run swinstall command from root prompt.
7. it will show you all the available s/w on CD. (select source as local CD rom before this step)
8. Select glance plus trial version. Select the version you ant to install.
9. you have to mark the GlancePlus/UX software using action menu.
10. then select install from the same menu.
11. It will do analysis of the s/w, required disk space etc..etc...
12. Once you see analysis is completed, press DONE button.
13. Now the s/w is loaded in your machine. After completion, exit from the swinstall.
That's it.

Re: installation of glance from CD
I try to mount the cdrom and get the following error:
The command used to mount the new file system, mount(1m), has failed. The stderr output from the command is shown below. The disk has not been configured for use.
The command used to mount new file system, mount(1m), has failed to mount /SD_CDROM. The stderr output from the command is shown below.
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0: Device busy
I then tried to unmount and remount and still got the same errors.
Any help?
Thanks,

Re: installation of glance from CD
You may not be using the correct device file ( /dev/dsk/cxtydz). Do this:
# ioscan -fnC disk
Look for SCSI CDROM devices and findout the proper device file. OR post the output of the command

Re: installation of glance from CD
Please make sure that
1. CD is in the drive.
2. run pwd command anf find out whether you are in the /SD_CDROM directory.
3. If you are in /SD_CDROM directory, it will give error. Do cd to / and then mount cdrom drive
hope this helps.

Re: installation of glance from CD
Check whether you have a mounted CD in the drive ? If not, remove the CD and insert it again.
Make sure that you are using a good mountable CD. For confirmation, test it with a new CD.
Your device file is the right one, as we can see from the ioscan output.

Re: installation of glance from CD
Am still having no luck. I have tried different CD media in the CDROM drive but still get the message that the device is busy when I try to mount it.
Any other ideas, or is it possible that the CDROM itself is trash? Are there any other additional diagnostics I can run?
Thanks,
Steve Colbert

Re: installation of glance from CD
Try this:
1) diskinfo -v /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0
2) Check that no pfs daemons are running:
# ps -aef | grep pfs
Also which OS are you running ? DO you have the latest patches installed ? There are chances that the CD drive is bad ? Does any activity going on in CD ( drive LED ) ?

Re: installation of glance from CD
The diskinfo shows the details about the CD. Try mounting on a new directory:
# cd /
# mkdir /cdrom
# chmod 777 cdrom
# mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d0 /cdrom

Re: installation of glance from CD
It may happen that your SD_CDROM directory has been mounted already by some other file system.
just go the ?SD_CDROM and do ls.
let us know what do you see there.
Otherwise create new directory cdrom1
and try to mount cd-rom on that file system.
Hope this helps.
As you said cd is spinning in the drive.....that might be a CD-DRIVE problem or may be a CD-ROM problem.
Try to replace CD-DRIVE from other machine, that's the final solution you might have.

-Piyush.

Re: installation of glance from CD
have tried to create different directories and mount to them but still get same error.
I go into the SD_CDROM directory but see no files within it.
I was using this drive successfully at the beginning of the week, but obviously something happened to the drive, probably hardware.
I am going to get one of our staff techies to replace the drive and try again.
Thanks to everyone who responded to my queries. It was most appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve Colbert
