Installation of HP-UX 11.0 on 735/125

I am new to this forum and fairly new to HP-UX. I recently obtained an apollo 735/125 with HP-UX 10.20 ("pre-") installed and working. I also obtained installation media (2 CDs) for HP-UX 11.0, which I would like to install on my 735, to have a more modern OS and a clean install that I controlled myself. - Being aware that this setup (11.0 on 735) is not officially supported by HP, I have read reports that it works nevertheless. However, when I try to install it by booting from the Install CD, which turns the screen black after a few seconds and then times out after about five minutes reporting a panic while (or right after) it probes for I/O hardware - it prints a list o SCSI messages and reports a crash at the very end. Afterwards, the file system of the hard drive is corrupt and gets repaired. When I let it reboot, 10.20 boots fine from that SCSI HD - which is a 9GB Seagate (wide SCSI) connected to the 50pin SCSI cables with a converter. I would greatly appreciate any hint that brings me a bit closer to my goal. Thank you very much in advance!

Re: Installation of HP-UX 11.0 on 735/125

Definitely check your cables for damage.
Also, you might want to remove any EISA cards if attached. If any are installed, they will be near your power supply.
Remove your power supply cover and check for connected boards around the border of the supply. If there are any, firmly pull the vertical board on the left side of the supply straight out. Any attached board will come out with it.
This may be causing issues. I can't remember if I heard 11.0 or 11i does not support EISA.
If it is 11.0, this might be a possible source of your problems.
Other than that, I have a just for fun 735/99 and it's one tough (albeit slow) little system.
I use it for all sorts of little projects.

Good luck,
Kel

Re: Installation of HP-UX 11.0 on 735/125

Hi Kelly: Thanks for your quick response! - In the meantime I have checked for any EISA cards - none are installed. However, there is a card on the left side of the power supply with an empty EISA slot. It does not seem as if this card itself can be removed. As far as the cables are concerned, I believe they are all fine, since 10.20 works beautifully (same disk, same cables). - Are you running 11.0 on your 735/99 successfully? - I would still appreciate any other suggestions! - Again, thanks a lot!

Hi Thomas,

Are you sure that :

1. Your CD-ROM drive is working fine, I mean that can you mount it and scan the content of of any other CD.

2. Can you scan the content of your installation CD ?

3. Is your Installation CD containing the LIF Area which allow you to boot on CD ?

Hi Magdi:

Thanks for your ideas, however, the CD Drive works fine once 10.20 is booted, I can mount and scan any CD I tried, including the installation CD. I also used this installation CD, to temporarily install 11.0 on my 712/100 (which usually runs NeXTStep 3.3) - so I know, the CD is fine.

Re: Installation of HP-UX 11.0 on 735/125

Hi,
Tried to send this message yesterday, but was having trouble getting through.
Forget what I said about EISA, it should work on 11.0
Quick question - Did you have the or an install CD for 10.2?
If so, try booting it and see if this one also crashes. You may have a CD-ROM drive defect.
Also, check the 11.0 CD for any damage.
A deep scratch in the right place could cause all sorts of havoc.
Good luck,
Kel

Re: Installation of HP-UX 11.0 on 735/125

Hi,
I have installed HP 11.0 on apollo 715/50 machine. It is running fine.

Just to tell you that , if you are using external CD ROM drive then check the SCSI terminator connected to it. If not then it gives problem.

Re: Installation of HP-UX 11.0 on 735/125

Hi Thomas
I just confirm by looking book "migrating from 10.x to 11.x" that 735 is not supported.
Also if you check the url posted by Sanjay it confirms this.

This is the cutting from it.
