I have an HP 9000 C200 workstation with a Seagate ST34572WS Hard drive. I added a CD-ROM drive that is know to work. The hard drive has no operating system installed on it. I am trying to install HP-UX 10.20 from the "Install and Core OS" CD (July 1996 vintage). I interrupt the boot process and type "sea" to search boot devices. I get the "TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-5401TA" with path P0 and device path SESCSI.2.0. I also get "SEAGATE ST34572WS" with path number P1 and device path FWSCSI.6.0.
At the prompt I type "bo P0" to boot off the Core OS CD. for "Interact with IPL?" I put "n".
The system begins to boot and then I get a message that says: "NOTE: There were no disk devices found during the scan. Make sure that the destination disks are connected and powered on. Would you like to re-scan for devices at this time?" If I re-scan I just get the same message saying no disk devices found. If I say "no" to re-scan then the system reboots. If I just let the machine boot from the primary boot device I can see the green LED on the disk begin to flash as it is being accessed. On the console I see the message: BOOTABLE DEVICE FOUND:
Path number is P0, Device Path is FWSCSI.6.0, and Device Type and Utilities is SEAGATE ST34572WS. I get a message that says Exec failed: Cannot find /stand/vmunix or /vmunix.
How can I make my hard drive be found when the install utility scans for hard drives. Am I missing something here?
TIA
Ed

Solution
The Seagate disk you have (and the C200 for that matter) did not exist at the time your (very old) HP-UX Core CDROM was created. There is a common assumption that all SCSI disks are the same, but several years ago, the HP-UX drivers for SCSI required currently supported disks in order to work.
Newer versions of the HP-UX Core CDROM will probably work OK. The latest version of HP-UX 10.20 for workstations is called ACE (Additional Core Enhancements). Get an ACE CDROM dated 1999 or later.
The existing opsystem on the disk (which is missing vmunix) might be able to be recovered by booting a recnt ACE CDROM and using the recovery capability on the Core CDROM.

Re: Installing HP-UX 10.20
Bill,
My HP-UX 11.00 ACE (November 1999) finally got here and I am well into the installation as I write this.
Thank you very much for the advice.
