Installing tape drives / size of tape.

Hello everyone,

I am prepairing to purchange 12 C6365A 12/24 DDS3 tape drives and 3 C4318A Smart Rack Enclosures.
They are going to be for backups on some L2000 servers.

Would the installation for theese drives be as follows:

1.shutdown the server
2.plug the drives in the port.
3.bring the server back up.
4.if the hardware is not seen run insf -e.

And also how can I tell what size tapes to buy?? I am planning on doing ignite takes and fbackup tapes.

Thank you
~ Richard

Re: Installing tape drives / size of tape.

Hello,

No need to bring down the server. You can do it online.

Install the rack and the tape drive. Run the cable.
Once you are done with hardware installation, run insf -e and then run ioscan -fnC tape to see the device .

These hardware comes with a tape and a cleaning tape. You can purchase similar tapes in future.

Re: Installing tape drives / size of tape.

You can interrupt the boot process and do a "sea" and determine whether the device is sensed or not. Also make sure it doesn't conflict on SCSI ID.

You can buy DDS3 tapes 12/24(compressed).

Re: Installing tape drives / size of tape.

I assume that you are going to spread these tape drives over more than one server. Your sequence looks fine but note that these are SE-SCSI devices so make sure that you have the proper interface and the proper termination.

I would use the 125m tapes; that will give you a native capacity of 12GB. The prudent assumption to make when sizing your media requirements is that no compression takes place. If you follow that principle then there will be no unpleasant surprises. Remember the 24GB compressed capacity assumes a 2:1 compression ratio; not all data can be compressed that mush though some can be compressed much more. The safe assumption is to assume that no compression takes place.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Installing tape drives / size of tape.

Hello,

Your plan looks okay to me.

As for the size of the tapes, even for ignite tapes, I need 125P tapes; the 120 or 90 aren't even close to being big enough. On my L2000, however, my 120 tapes are big enough. This also depends on your fbackup job(s). My only fbackup job backs up around 30 GB.

Hope this helps

Re: Installing tape drives / size of tape.

Hi Richard

It is always advised to shutdownt he server and do the installation , the plan looks cool .

for the media part the DDS3 drive will use the following media
4mm DL 125M-410Ft Computer Grade data Cartridge.
