Installing Veritas on HP-UX 11i

Hello all,

I am trying to set up Veritas backup client on the HP-UX 11i server. Apparently the MC/System Environment Console multiplexer uses port 10000. The Veritas beremote service supplied by symantec requires that I use port 10000. Can someone send me instructions on setting this up? Can I change the console port without damaging my server?

Thanks in advance.

When you say it "uses port 10000" do you just mean you see an entry in /etc/services at this value, or is something actually listening at port 10000 on your server?

Just cos there's an entry in /etc/services doesn't mean the host is using that port. I think this service was actually to do with a *very* old version of Serviceguard or something of that ilk - I seriously doubt you are using the port...

if:

netstat -an | grep 10000

returns nothing I'd guess you are safe to use that port - you might want to change the service name and description in /etc/services though to avoid confusion...

Here is what I see on my server

# netstat -an | grep 10000
tcp 0 0 *.10000 *.* LISTEN

# ps -ef | grep beremote
root 1253 1 0 Jun 30 ? 3:39 /opt/VRTSralus/bin/beremote
root 14976 16205 0 11:46:23 pts/2 0:00 grep beremote

# more /etc/services
console 10000/tcp # MC/System Environment console multiplexor

I think the port is already in use.

Re: Installing Veritas on HP-UX 11i

are you sure its not beremote itself using the port? If you stop beremote do you still have something listening on port 10000?

/etc/services is a documentation file ONLY. Just because something is listed does not mean it is in use.

You can have ports in use that are NOT listed in /etc/services.

Are you using the "MC/System Environment Console multiplexer" (whatever that is!)? If not, then it should be safe to install your Veritas backup client.
