Instant Ignition vs Fresh Install

I recently installed a new N-Class that was setup with instant ignition from HP and I decided to re-install it from scratch, but it seemed like a lot more work having to reinstall the O/S and other products that were put on by HP. Is it really necessary to do a fresh install or is the install that comes with instant ignition just fine? Please let me know whats the recommendation on the street. Please don't ask why I did it, I just want recommendations to learn more about it. Thanks for your time!

Re: Instant Ignition vs Fresh Install

hi,

depends on your needs. Generally a pre-installed system is a good starting point but needs customizing. Most of the time you want other filesystem sizes and software added & removed.
It's less work to customize a pre-installed system than to start over from scratch.

Re: Instant Ignition vs Fresh Install

If you want to put the machine in a cluster with the same patchlevel and OS version on all nodes, I would recommend a fresh install so you know what is on your server. This also applies for reference/test machines of course.
If the server is going to be used stand-alone and you don't need to change things like bootdisk I would go for less work and use the instant ignition. I'm not sure if you can change the lvol sizes in vg00 with instant ignition. If not, that could also be a reason to do a fresh install.
Every problem has at least one solution. Only some solutions are harder to find.

Re: Instant Ignition vs Fresh Install

Hi,

In general it's a good system if you don't have any specific File system requirment related to vg00.

You may require to change kernel parameters according to applications.

otherwise it's a good choice.

Re: Instant Ignition vs Fresh Install

The fresh install from an Ignite server is a fresh install plus.

To build an ignite image you start with a core os cd. You use swcopy to build the core os. Then you use make_sys_image to get a golden image onto the Ignite server that includes optional software and patches put on top of that core os.

If the ignite server was built with an old core image, that could present some challenges, however the server can be updated or include any core os image you want.
