Invalid hostid

When running the command: uname -i to obtain the hostid for the server, it returns the hostname of the server...

root@tmcpoc01:[/root]:
=>uname -i
tmcpoc01
root@tmcpoc01:[/root]:

Why would this return the hostname and how do I find the true servers hostid ??

Re: Invalid hostid

Hi Mike:

The manpages note that 'uname -i' will return the nodename in the event that the machine ID number can't be returned.

Try:

# getconf CS_MACHINE_IDENT

...this should be the machine ID returned by 'uname -i'. If this is empty, did you recently have an engineer replace a system board? Was 'ssconfig' run by the engineer?

Re: Invalid hostid

The good old "ss_config" does not apply to all systems - that's why I asked for the model of the server.
;-)

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Ah, that's good to know. You deal with far more hardware and up-to-date stuff at that, than I do :-) This is interesting, though.

Re: Invalid hostid

Now please logon to the MP and do

MP:CM> id

Post the result!

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

[mp] MP:CM> id

This command allows you to change certain fields in the Stable complex
configuration portion of the complex profile.

Re: Invalid hostid

BTW, most servers build this ID based on product- and serial number. Older entry level models store these values on the system board only, newer systems have it on different locations and will synchronize the values after a hardware replacement (like modern PCs and notebooks too).

You can manually force these settings in various ways, depending on the hardware.

But, if the value is not correct set or sync has failed for any reason, you won't have a valid ID.

Note: non-cell based HP9000 servers are different to non-cell based Integrites, cell-based systems are different again.

;-)

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Invalid hostid

OK, product and serial is not set for any reason.
It also has a HP9000 *and* an Integrity value set.

Did you replace some hardware?

It should look similar to this:

MP:CM> id

This command allows you to change certain fields in the Stable complex
configuration portion of the complex profile.

Retrieving the stable complex configuration portion of the complex profile.

MP modifiable stable complex configuration data fields.
Model String : 9000/800/rp7420
Complex System Name : Complex 01
Original Product Number: A7025A
Current Product Number : A7025A
UUID : 708e9018-10e4-11dc-a3bb-______________
Creator Manufacturer : hp
Creator Product Name : server rp7420
Creator Serial Number : DEH4123456
OEM Manufacturer :
OEM Product Name :
OEM Serial Number :
Diagnostic license : Disabled

You probably need to contact HP service to get this fixed, because you cannot change these values by yourself.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Invalid hostid

This is new hardware that we were just given to install and bring up and running.....

We have a engineer coming in to look at it....

Re: Invalid hostid

Did you replace the MP by chance?

If you did, the new MP did not grab the values from the other MP and/or cells.

Note: If you replace the MP, the system should be down but still powered on.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Invalid hostid

Anyway, you may try to shutdown the OS, keep the unit powered, remove the master (lower) MP, wait some minutes, push it back, wait some minutes and check the ID command again.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
