IOSCAN -f hanging, no response, not able to kill it - HP-UX 11.11

Hi,

a strange one. Trying to ioscan -f an rp8400 running HP-UX 11.11. I did not get any response.
Same thing via SAM (Disks section).

I could not even kill the process, since it got adopted by PID 1.

Nothing strange in the syslog:

vmunix I/O hardware probe time out.

Have you had this behaviour ?

Thanks in advance !

Mike

Michelle,

Is everything else on the server working fine?

At first view, it looks like a hardware problem to me.

Can you reboot your machine, is it possible?

Run also some hardware testing with stm in the machine.

Regards,

Jaime.

Re: IOSCAN -f hanging, no response, not able to kill it - HP-UX 11.11

Usually caused when HP-UX has exhausted all bus instances available thereby causing ioscan hangs. You might need to install PHKL_31018; if possible could you post the output of:

# ioscan -funC ext_bus

~thanks

Mike,
I have only had this type of problem if a hardware item, normally disk, did not respond. Reasons could be faulty disk (check with dmesg) or device termination fault.

Jaime,

Sorry for the disturb.

We verified that there was huge activity on the drives, so that maybe that was the cause.

Now everything is fine.

Thanks again !

99 times out of 10, one doesn't need to perform a real rescan of the I/O tree. As such, I find that adding 'k' to the command line to get what the kernel already knows sufficient:

ioscan -fk

it is particularly useful on larger systems - like the rp84XX's
