Re: ioscan NO_HW error message.!!

Basically it means that the machine you are running that command from no longer has access to those particular LUNs on the EMC array.

This could be due to any number of things: 1) Bad cable 2) Bad Fibre card 3) Bad SAN Switch port 4) The zoning for those LUNs was changed and you no longer have access.

Re: ioscan NO_HW error message.!!

Hi rveri.

You didn't say the system's status now.
You may used ioscan -fnuC disk command!
With "u" option, this command don't scan hardware, just read the result from the last ioscan -fnC disk command before.

Is your system OK now?
If yes, let's try with : ioscan -fC disk command.
Show me the result.

Goodluck!

Re: ioscan NO_HW error message.!!

HI Veri,

NO_HW means that the system no longer has access to that specific device.

Re: ioscan NO_HW error message.!!

You had a disk and now you don't.

As I recall this does not usually happen when you move around or remove LUNS unless you do it while the system is hot.

The diagnostics given above are good. You might notice some data missing.

Re: ioscan NO_HW error message.!!

That particular field is the software field, which give you the software binding state.

NO_HW implies that the hardware at this address is no longer responding.

Try forcibly binding driver sdisk at the concerned hardware paths.

Re: ioscan NO_HW error message.!!

Hi Veri

IF there is a device on that port sending "succesfull" hardware info and bound to a driver it would say CLAIMED.
If the driver is not working correctly or not installed it would be "UNCLAIMED/UNKNOWN".

Now if it was CLAIMED to some time prior to the point where the sucessfull interigation messages stopped going through the status will change to "NO_HW" this thus implies that the hardware the machine is "expecting" there is not there any more.

I do notice this is on different IO paths and different switch zones. I would expect that either the SYMMETRIX went down or the switches ... or a business copy is taking place involving those luns.

Hope this helps in some way

Re: ioscan NO_HW error message.!!

Few things;
Are those disks part of any volume group?
If so, do they appear in "string s/etc/lvmtab"?
If so, can you activate the vg "vgchange -a y /dev/vg??"?

If your problem s software rather than hardware a reboot would be in order, or simply do following 3 steps:
1. rm or rmsf on all /dev/dsk/.. & /dev/rdsk/..
2. ioscan -fnC disk
3. insf -e
