Is this the correct syntax for ioscan:

ioscan -fnC tape>ioscan_tape.txt

ioscan -fnC all>ioscan_all.txt ( i want all the devices )

For you second one (all devices), you can leave off the "C" and the "all".

for tape devices your syntax is right but you don't need "C" and device type argument for all devices I mean ioscan -fn > ioscan_all.txt is enough

You can do a "man ioscan".

example: For tape/LAN devices

ioscan -fnC tape

ioscan -fnc lan

sp,

why do i get :
'Can't open tape: No such file or directory'-

when doing the ioscan -fnC tape

if i leave out the redirection it works ???

i.e ioscan -fnC tape (displays on console)

You errors probably stem from a shell parsing problem. By any chance have you changed the IFS or are you trying to use that world's greatest shell that is so popular with them Linux folks?

Try this syntax (spaces and all):

ioscan -C tape -fn > /tmp/myfile

and if if fails, post the exact error.
