just playing with some new IPF.
First step is to change their vg00 layout, and i was thinking of using the make_tape_recovery.
I checked FAQ and other thread, and installed the B.5.xxx version, usable with the IPF architecture.
But now i'm unable to boot from the tape: the EFI firmware is completely different from the one of the PA-RISC I was used to and i do not know the right commands :(
How can i boot from tape ?
In some threads i found that i should boot from the install CD, but i'm having trouble also with that. I tried to insert the bootable DVD, but I can only list the content of the directory, but not to boot. The only usable files that i found was IINSTALL, but i didn't succed.
What is the right sequence to use ?
I know that this information is somewhere in the documentation, but i'm short of time.
Thank you to you all !
Massimo

Re: IPF servers: is it possible to make_tape_recovery them ?
Thnak you Hemanth, i also found similar information, but I was searching for a confirmation.
My second question is still open: how do you make a rx server boot from tape ? That EFI boot sequence is rather obscure to me...
Thanks,
Massimo

Re: IPF servers: is it possible to make_tape_recovery them ?
I have also been told that it will be supported in the Integrated PA-RISC/Itanium HP-UX release later this year.

Solutionyou cannot boot an IPF machine from tape. To use the make_recovery_tape you need to boot from DVD.
in the boot options menu you should have an option called "Removable Media" or maybe similar. This is what you select to boot from. If you do not have the option, s.o. must have it deleted in the "Boot Maintenance menu" and you will have to go there and recreate it.
*If* a tape is attached, after boot you will see the options "install from DVD" and "recover from tape".

Re: IPF servers: is it possible to make_tape_recovery them ?
question begins to become interesting!
Does anyone created a bootable make_tape_recovery tape for an IPF architeture and USED IT ?
I mean, what is the purpose of having such a tool, if you cannot use it ?
However, this limitation won't seem so odd... i love informatics!
Back to serious consideration: then the only way to change the vg00 layout would be to full reinstall the OS, then patching ?
Any clue ?
Thank you all,
Massimo

Re: IPF servers: is it possible to make_tape_recovery them ?
actually I have done this (i.e. cloning IPF via make_tape_recovery) and it worked like a treat (except that I wasted about an hour trying to find a way to boot from tape ....)
But you can to all the usual stuff (i.e. changing vg00 layout, hostname, ip, gateway etc etc) like on a PA-RISC when you use your recovery tape.

Bernhard
