ipforwarding hpux 11i mc/service guard

hello all,

i have a two node mc/service guard cluster with hp-ux 11i.

we have noticed that hpux is configured for ip_forwarding on, but is not like that on my other 5 hpux 11i machines. Is ip forwarding required for the operation of service guard or can i turn it off?

Thanks in advance,

Aaron

Re: ipforwarding hpux 11i mc/service guard

Aaron: I know of no reason why forwarding should be turned on, at least not for normal MC/SG operation.

There is some requirement for "trust" between nodes, to allow files to be distributed as a normal function, but not IP forwarding.

Deciding to turn on forwarding should be immaterial to MC/SG, other than in regards to IP addresses controlled by MC/SG (package IPs). You can really cause problems if you mess with those addresses...

Hope this helps. --bmr

IIRC ip forwarding is automatically turned on if the server has more that one active network card (which a mcsg node always will).

This post has some good responses to help you understand what ip forwarding is actually doing:

No you don't need forwarding turned on for mcsg, but I'd check the routing table of these two nodes (and any other systems relating to them) for any anomolies before turning it off. Could be someone turned this on for a good reason. Also check whether gated is running on either node.
