The installation starts fine, but then it crashes while loading module 'ide-generic' for 'Linux IDE support'.
When I do sea ipl in the Main Menu, I get a message "IPL error: bad LIF magic. " below the CD-ROM info.
Any ideas?

Re: IPL error: bad LIF magic on CD-ROM
I think the first question would be: is it possible to install Linux on a HP9000? The answer is no, only on Itanium.
So that is the reason you are obtaining these problems.
Best regards,
Fabio

Re: IPL error: bad LIF magic on CD-ROM
If you look at http://www.parisc-linux.org, you'll see that Debian has built-in support for PA processors => it IS possible to install Linux on this machine. Or at least it appears so:)
Muthukumar,
Thanks a lot. If I type bo P0 (where P0 is the path to the cdrom), the Debian installation procedure starts, so the CD itself must be bootable, must it not?
Thanks,
mARGO

Re: IPL error: bad LIF magic on CD-ROM
I took a look at the supported hardware link and, though I see the L and N class machines which preceded the rp series, I do not see ANY rp machines at all. I have to wonder if this is simply outdated documentation or if it actually indicates lack of support.

Re: IPL error: bad LIF magic on CD-ROM
The below given links may be helpful for you during the installation Debian in PA-RISC.
http://debui.vlsm.org/releases/sarge/hppa/install.pdf.en
http://debui.vlsm.org/releases/sarge/debian-installer/
Hope you are using the PA-RISC version of debian OS for installing.
You may use the attached PDF also.

Re: IPL error: bad LIF magic on CD-ROM
It didn't say anything about CD-ROM (no wonder, with no media in it), but the IPL error: bad LIF magic message persists!
I really wonder what is the reason for that.

Re: IPL error: bad LIF magic on CD-ROM
I guess the rp3440 is not old enough to be supported by debian for linux installation ;-)
Hope this helps!

Torsten.

You may also download the ISO image file from debian OS (hppa) download site & create a CD using Nero & try booting.
The CD media or drive also may be defect.

Re: IPL error: bad LIF magic on CD-ROM
Thanks. Where can I get it? Google gives no results:(
That's what is said about rp on pateam.org list of machines with PA-RISC linux proven working:
Running two CPUs (4 cores) is currently very buggy on that box, but it behaves a bit better when one CPU (2 cores) is deconfigured at boot time, or when running a UP kernel. Still, it is probably experiencing some cache troubles as well. As it is certainly not yet deemed to be "operational", we cannot tell it "works".

Re: IPL error: bad LIF magic on CD-ROM
Thanks for the links.
I tried to boot from a Debian-hppa CD to begin with, as it's my goal - to install that system on the rp3440:)
The CD itself is OK (tested), but it may be the DVD-rom in the HP 9000 that is not working.

Re: IPL error: bad LIF magic on CD-ROM
I heard it before (I mean Linux on PA-RISC) but like Pete already wrote "I do not see ANY rp machines at all" on parisc-linux site between supported platforms. Even if you can install it (and I hope that for you) I don't know what you can do more than some commands.
By the way good luck....
Best regards,
Fabio
PS: no points for me here in any case... :)
