IPL error: bad LIF magic

HI,

I am trying to upgrade the firmware on our B180L workstation console for our V2500 Server.

I keep getting the following error: "IPL error: bad LIF magic" I clean the tape drive and downloaded firmware patch PF_CB1X0061.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Re: IPL error: bad LIF magic

IPL is the boot loader and if you are getting this error, it means the boot loader got overwritten somehow.

A few possibilities:

1) If you are booting a CD or tape, there is likely a problem with the media or device.

2) If you are booting your root disk, has the path changed to your primary disk (i.e. if the firmware was updated, you may have to reinitialize the boot path ).

3) If the boot path is good and you're trying to boot off of a disk, then somehow your boot lif has been damaged.

To repair it, boot the install CD and choose recovery shell.

Answer "no" to networking.

From the main menu, choose Recover an Unbootable system.

From the recovery menu, select, rebuild the boot lif ONLY.

DO NOT use the option to restore all files necessary for boot. This will take a while to recover from if you do.

Sounds like your tape is not bootable. Did it create successfully? Can you test it elsewhere?

Re: IPL error: bad LIF magic

Hi Joseph,

I assume you mean you get that error when trying to boot the tape that contains the PDC update. So I'd suspect the tape is bad or had a media error during creation.
So you have two options:

1) Run mediainit on the tape to verify the bad blocks on the tape & recreate the boot tape again.
2) Create another boot/update tape using a new tape.

Jeff
