IPL error on recovery with IGNITE and DAT
I made backups with "make_recovery -A -v -C -d /dev/rmt/0mn". No problems. But when I need really a recovery, 95% fails!! What a secure tool!! Problem: After Booting from tape I get the followin message:
#Booting...
#Boot IO Dependent Code (IODC) revision 1
Then many hours nothing happend!!
The only thing I can do is, to get out the tape.
Then I get the following message:
#Alert Level: 6 = Boot possible, pending #failure - action required
#Reasen for alert
#Source: 8=I/O
#Source Detail= 6 = disk ...
#... type 0= Data Field unused
Is there a secure method do make an automatic full backup and RESTORE!! for HP-Systems ???

Re: IPL error on recovery with IGNITE and DAT
Ive been using ignite for years and the very few times ive had problems booting from the ignite tape can be caused by;
1. using non-HP DAT drives
2. faulty DAT drive or tape
3. DAT drive not terminated
4. DAT drive connected to wrong SCSI bus (ie. on a K use an HSC not HP-PB)
I hope you can test out some of these and let us know what was causing your error.
Im from Palmerston North, New Zealand, but somehow ended up in London...

Re: IPL error on recovery with IGNITE and DAT
The failure is happening before the system is HARD Booted and ISL is able to load the kernel.
You can pinpoint where it fails by looking at the messages from a successful boot:
Interact with IPL (Y, N, or Cancel)?> n
Booting...
Boot IO Dependent Code (IODC) revision 1
HARD Booted.
ISL Revision A.00.38 OCT 5, 1994
ISL booting hpux (;0):INSTALL
Boot
: tape(10/12/5.0.0.0.0.0.0;0):INSTALL
I suggest, interact with the IPL and see if a SEArch shows the tape drive. From the prompt, enter: SEA IPL
Verify the tapes as Stefan has suggested.
When the recovery fails this early in the process, there is a hardware issue.
You may also want to check your Ignite version. There have been many improvements and using a current version will only improve make_recovery's performance.
Best Wishes,
Cheryl

Re: IPL error on recovery with IGNITE and DAT
Because it is a L1000 I have to use an extern tape (intern is a DVD). Because I have an DDS3 tape, I use it. It works fine! IPL SEARCH and tar allways works fine! The first 2 times also a restore works fine!
Now I find out:
It's a SONY !!!!
I change it with HP ! Now on HP it works fine, but with the SONY I have problems on my PC!!!
