is backup necessary before extendfs?????

now we have extended lv successfully without umounting filesystems on vgom

as app on vgom is very important, we are going to umount vgom and extend fs this weekend

should we have to backup the whole things in vgom before we extending filsystem? It may take considerable time, but we hope we can make it as soon as possible

Re: is backup necessary before extendfs?????

meg,

In an ideal world you do not need to, but in the real world, if your not sure back it up. The procedure you are doing does not and should not require a backup but man is it nice to have if something gets messed up. I would suggest that if your not familiar with extending file systems and items such as that you'll feel alot safer if you have one.

Up till now I have never needed one.

No warranties of course. Better safe than sorry...

HI
Yes backup.

I have had a failure on extendfs with data corruption.

Re: is backup necessary before extendfs?????

It is advisable/important to backup the volume, and if you have a database on it, shutdown the database before doing the backup and the extending too.

Re: is backup necessary before extendfs?????

Hi Meg

It is always better to do a back up before doing any FS changes . Actually in this case you are just extending the file system so it is not vey critical as the new slices will be added to the exisitng ones , but in case there are some panics at that time you may never know will cause the system to crash and you will never be able to reciover since you never had a good back up . So it is always suggested that you have a good backup for all the partions , befroe doing any extend operations.

Hi,

I've never had a problem but I would back up. I have never had a high-speed automobile accident either but I still wear a seatbelt. Better safe than sorry.

Re: is backup necessary before extendfs?????

in most of the cases its safe to do .. if you want to be 200% safe with your data, then go for backup. Sometimes because of bad patch, the extendfs may corrupt the data (i have not heard any thing like this before).

its up to you.. backup is like insurence.. as long as you don't loose anything by backingup data .. why not backup?.. you know what I am saying ??

Re: is backup necessary before extendfs?????

No.
the only time I'd 100% recommend a backup is when doing filesystem reduction and any filesystem manipulation via fsadm..

not that OnlineJFS is unstable but just that it is more potentially going to undo things.

Backup strategy is completely up to you, I bet you'd feel more confident if you had one though!!

Re: is backup necessary before extendfs?????

Hi,
while extending fs backup is not must whether the fs is vxfs or hfs, but while reducing backup is a must.

Hi Meg,

I never needed to do it. It's secure.
