Is HFS a problem with 11i upgrade

Hi

I'm planning a 10.20 to 11i upgrade on K260 box and this system is set up with all HFS filesystems in the root volume group (/,/usr,/opt,/var and /tmp).

Will this cause any problems during th upgrade?

and is there any reasons to convert (recreate) these filesystems at all, as long as this only is a test and development server?

Re: Is HFS a problem with 11i upgrade

The prevailing sentiment here on the forums is that you're better off to do a cold install rather than upgrade, particularly when going from 10.20 to 11.x. That would also eliminate any concerns about your HFS filesystems.

This should not be a problem, HFS is still supported.
Your problem MAY be that the file systems may be too small for the upgrade.
Also, many people prefer to cold install rather than upgrade .

Re: Is HFS a problem with 11i upgrade

Hi Andreas:

While this should not cause any problems, you would be better assured of a successful transition if you did a cold-install rather than an upgrade. You will end up with a much cleaner environment and have the opportunity to resize filesystems whose size may no longer meet your needs.

Regards!

Clean install solves a lot of problems. You can use the HFS filesystems from non-root disks although the advantages of converting them to VxFS are legion...faster fsck time, higher performance, etc.

Re: Is HFS a problem with 11i upgrade

Also keep in mind that the disk space needs in /usr and /var can be quite substantial during an upgrade. There can be transient but critical needs for several hundred megabytes of extra space in each of these during the upgrade process. I definitely agree with the others that you're far better off doing the cold install in this situation, and that if you do, you'd be wise to use VxFS instead of HFS.
