is it doable to upgarde 1i to 11i.

Hi Guru's,
I will a new "loan machine" running 11i L class.I want to port over the data/software from old machine running 11.00 to that loan machine.
I planned to ignite the old machine and duplicate to new loan machine. This will make my new loan machine running 11.00.Next upgrade the O/S of loan machine to 11i.

Is this makes any sense?.(Or my brain deceiving me again) Or anybody done this before.

The reason for port over is because of the software. We don't know where to get the software except it is in our old machine.

regards

Hi mB,

You could export/import the volumes that reside on the old server and then run 11i. You could also clone using an ignite tape. Apparently the L class do support HPUX 11 as well as 11i. Seeing that you have MC/SG you may have some problems anyway. Unfortunately I don't know MC/SG that well and have not experienced moving data etc from an old server to a new one.

Re: is it doable to upgarde 1i to 11i.

The possibility exists of using an Ignite (make_tape_recovery) tape to install a different model than the L-class.

make_tape_recovery will put all the kernels (INSTALL, WINSTALL, IINSTALL and VINSTALL) for all the various HW models, which is helpful for cloning. make_tape_recovery is newer and allows VG's outside the root VG. make_recovery is older and replaced by make_tape_recovery

Update to a newer version of Ignite to take advantage of these features and make sure that the source system has the HWE patches that the target system will need. The ignite revision has be be high enough to support the hardware.

The only way exporting and importing the volumes would work was if the data is housed on an external storage device.
Another option would be to use a more mundane utility like tar or fbackup to only backup the data you want to migrate to the new server. Then you could restore it without over writing the OS.
