ITRC member appears in Infoworld article
There is an article appearing in Infoworld (11/02/01) on "Communities of Practice" (wot you think THIS is guv'ner? chopped liver?) where I hold forth that the ITRC IS one heck of a "community of practice" that is as vibrant, alive and growing as any meat community of practice. I stated that....
NEWS FLASH
This just in from Dan Gazzaniga.....
"I just read the article in Info World on community forums (11-02-2001,
HEADLINE: Practice makes perfect). You had a great quote in there:
"There are members of my online community whom I will trust before my
closest colleague in technical matters. I will accept their technical
recommendations for standards and procedures without question," he says.
"When new system administrators have systems that go down, they post the
symptoms and have detailed instructions returned to them on how to proceed
with repairs within the hour," Courry says. Despite not meeting many members
face-to-face, Courry says that extended communities are "just as strong,
vibrant, and meaningful as any internal community of practice that a company
has established."
I was wondering if you would be willing to let us use your quote for helping
to communicate the value of community forums to potential new members, new
customers, etc., to help drive the value message home and hopefully increase
participation/success of the forums? Likely places that it would end up are
online at the ITRC in an article or in print in collateral, such as a
brochure.
If you can swing it, that would be great. We can follow up regarding the
process for receiving your ok to use it. Look forward to hearing from you!"
BTW, you "members of my online community whom I will trust ......" know who you are!!!

Re: ITRC member appears in Infoworld article
Just read the article online at http://navigation.helper.realnames.com/framer/1/112/default.asp?realname=InfoWorld&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Einfoworld%2Ecom&frameid=1&providerid=112&uid=30008198
Attaboy Paul! I echo your sentiments. I don't have peers in my company so it is great to be able to turn to the forums. And if I did have other UNIX SAs, I'd still use the forum.

Say Paul, now how the heck did you get in there anyway? Details are a good thing.

Re: ITRC member appears in Infoworld article
as one of those (silent majority) that reads the forums daily although not answering or posting too many items, I have to agree that this is the best training ground and information repository for sys admins ive ever seen.
I'd say that 95% or more of our software problems are solved by searching forums, patches, etc without calling for support. We always have the website up during system upgrades and I don't think I could get thru a week without it.
So all you experts (and Dan and the itrc team)have my thanks and i'm sure there are thousands of other "forum readers" that are relying on this site, and the people in it, but you just never hear from.
Its nice to see one of you (and this site) get some worldwide acknowledgment.

Re: ITRC member appears in Infoworld article
I enjoyed reading your comments. I've been a long time Infoworld reader and I'm glad to see that they gave ITRC some "light" in this article. ITRC has been the best technical resource I've found on the net to date, as members strive hard to form a community of solid technical people. Thanks for brining it to our attention, lets hope that we see more "light" shed on ITRC from major publications like Infoworld.

I agree with your comments in the article.
But did you get any comments on your article beside the comment of fellow members?

Re: ITRC member appears in Infoworld article
It is up to HP and their publicity agents to *create* the comments from outside the ITRC forums. Now that they have "publicity" (advertising they have not "paid for") they combine this with advertising they DO pay for and have their sales teams and publicity agents put this in front of the public.
Besides, did you notice that my email address was not in the article? Awful hard to reach me except through HP's publicity agents who arranged the interview and the good offices of people like Dan Gazzaniga. (Unless you a competent web investigator)
Patience! HP will make good use of the article and my comments for the good of the forum in due time. After all, is that not what articles and comments are about? Not about the individual persons mentioned, but about the forum, it's growth and helping one another grow

Re: ITRC member appears in Infoworld article
and one comment you made really sums it up for me!
"There are members of my online community whom I will trust before my closest colleague in technical matters. I will accept their technical recommendations for standards and procedures without question,"
I know thats how I feel about the advice and help I get from my mentors on the ITRC!!
Richard =)
