There are no known UNIX drivers for this printer.
I have three options through SAM:
1) Local Printer
This won't work, because I don't have a serial / parallel port on my printer. It only has an ethernet connection.
2) Remote Host
This won't work, because the printer is on a LAN. It is not plugged into a remote host.
3) LAN
Sounds good, but SAM insists that I have jetdirect installed.
Does the JetDirect software require a printer with a JetDirect card, or can the JetDirect software implement a standard protocol or emulation to talk to a non-HP printer?

SolutionI believe you have to have a JetDirect card. From the man page for hppi:
"HP JetDirect Printer Installer for Unix (/opt/hpnpl/bin/hppi for HP-UX 10.0 and after, and Solaris) is an integrated menu-driven utility for spooler administration, JetDirect configuration and diagnostics for HP network printers connected by an HP JetDirect interface. "

Re: JetDirect Inquiry
There are downloadable drivers for Xerox and Lexmark for example...
We also have some Intermec Label printers that work with Lexmark driver...

Re: JetDirect Inquiry
You may not be able to effectively manage them like the ones with Jetdirect cards, but you should be able to print as long as they have the standard MIB/RFC implementation.
Moreover, it doesn't hurt to try as hppi software is free.

The only UNIX drivers are in source code, and I seriously doubt that they are compatible with 11.23 DDK.

Re: JetDirect Inquiry
A search on www.hp.com fails.
A search of the man pages fails:
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-60103/B2355-60103.html
I have one week (If I'm lucky) to develop SW to talk to this printer. The printer / Itanium are off-location on an isolated LAN. A proof of concept will consume valuable time. Even if it works, I'm shaky with progammatic printing on any UNIX system. I'm not familiar with the appropriate APIs (Is it X?). I would have to write to a disk file and issue a system command to spool the job, before I delete the temorary file. With each build in the SW development process, I would have to e-mail executables to the off-site location for testing.
There is a Windows 2000 PC on the LAN with TALLY drivers. I've configured the printer on this PC. I know that this works and I'm familiar with Windows GDI. If I report failure on the configuration of HP-UX to recognize the Tally, then I'm authorized to persue this approach.
I'll still assign points for the JetDirect download info. Is it on the application DVDs?
