Just a Query

Hi

I just want to know in MCSG for network polling is it using IP packets or TCP packets.

Re: Just a Query

TCP packets *are* IP packets - Did you mean TCP or UDP?

Either way for polling at the subnet level, MCSG uses IP - I think for some of the heartbeat traffic uses DLPI (link level).

Re: Just a Query

It will use the tcp...since the purpose of the heartbeat (and remember each heartbeat does a double beep) is to send and then receive an acknowledgement of receipt back..ergo: tcp

It can't use the udp packet because this is a one sided event that does not respond with any acknowledgement.

So, if SG doesn't get the acknowledgement back (tcp), it then springs into action thinking something has gone awry and decides which node is still 'live' and fails over.

Just expanding,

Re: Just a Query

See TCP and UDP are in transport layer.. IP is in Network Layer..

I just want to know is MCSG is functioning with TCP polling or IP polling with the immediate network device( switch or router)

Re: Just a Query

It *has* to be at the IP level - TCP has no concept of a 'subnet' - this is purely an IP construct

CTK =))

If I understood your question correctly, then it is IP. In the network layers - Application, Presentation, Session, Transport, Network, Datalink and Physical - The TCP and UDP comes in the Transport Layer, but the IP comes in the Network Layer.

Again, the router comes in the network layer, where as the switch/hub comes in the Data link layer. Here, the IP layer directly communicates with the router/switches.
