K Class gigabit ethernet card configuration

We have installed a gigabit ethernet card for K class running HP-UX 11i and it installed succesfuly. We configured it for networking (ip address and subnet mask). We can ping localhost and we can ping the ip address assigned without a problem.

The problem is that the card cannot talk to anything else beyond its own address. The activity light does not even blink during continous ping. We have tried configuring the card using both SAM and ifconfig. The link LED is continously blinking. What are we missing here?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Re: K Class gigabit ethernet card configuration

Is the gateway configured.

Hope this helps.

What does your "netstat -rn" & "ifconfig lan#" output look like?

Yes the gateway is properly configured. We just added the card to the already existing environment used by the i/o board ethernet port. We just disabled the i/o board port and we are just using with the gigabit card.

Re: K Class gigabit ethernet card configuration

Hi,
Check the polarity of the patch cord and check the link status in "lanadmin"
Both operating and administrative status should be up.

Re: K Class gigabit ethernet card configuration

Otukile,

Drop down one more OSI layer and check layer 2 connectivity. Is there another HP-UX system on that network segment to do a "linkloop" to? The command would be:

linkloop

and linkaddr can be found with the "lanscan" command.

Also, do you have the latest SAM patches?

Good luck,

Re: K Class gigabit ethernet card configuration

you may need to add an interface specification to that linkloop command, but it is indeed the thing to use if you have another UX system in the same broadcast domain (same set of switches, not on the other side of a router).

i would guess that you have incomplete arp entries in arp -an output.

lanadmin should show the operational state as up in addition ot the administrative state. you might also check dmesg output.

if you do a broadcast ping from another system on the broadcast domain, do you see the lights on the card blink?

btw, once you get the card working, don't expect too very much in the way of performance through the HSC GbE NIC in a K class. If you get much more than a couple hundred megabits per second, you will be doing very well indeed.
